'Taste of Georgetown' coming next month

Mmm-m-m-m. Tastes good.
That's what Annette Sessions expects people to say on Saturday, Oct. 4, as they enjoy "A Taste of Georgetown" at East Bay Park.
The day's food and fun begins at 12 p.m. and runs to 7 p.m.
A Georgetown native now living in Charlotte, Sessions said similar events there draw large crowds. People charter buses to come to the taste of Charlotte events.
"That's a nice park in Georgetown to use," she said. She would like the event at East Bay Park to become an annual event.
There will be lots of food and live entertainment, with prizes and fun for everyone. She encourages people to bring their lawn chairs and spend the day at the park.
"I want everyone to get it, and to come out."
The event this year is just for fun, Sessions said. It's not a fund-raiser.
"My main purpose in doing it is to give people something positive to do. We'll have activities for kids out there as well."
The food that will be served will be from the heritage of Georgetown, Sessions said.
There will be different kinds of rice, vegetables, salads, barbecue hog, barbecue ribs, chicken, crabs, Frogmore-style stew, fried fish and more.
She wants people to participate in a bake-off. There will be a $100 prize for cookies, cakes, pies or entrants' best dish.
Activities will include inflatable bouncers for kids, dancing contest, hula hoop contest and other talents. She's working on other activities and would like to get some type of sports set up, too.
What's it all for?
"Giving the community something positive to do," Sessions said. "Young kids sometimes are bored. If they are put in front of something like this, it will keep their minds off foolishness," she said.
She hopes the event will grow even bigger next year, and would like other vendors to take part.
"I'm asking for volunteers to come out and help with this thing if at all possible," Sessions said. People don't have to help all day.

Donations are $20 for adults, which includes food and drinks. Children are free if accompanied by an adult. Cost is $25 on the day of the event.
Advance tickets are available at Lamar's Fish N Chips and Randy's Barbershop.
"I know it's going to be good," Sessions said. "There are so many places and things in Georgetown that can be utilized, like that nice park in Georgetown. There will be a lot of activities for kids," she said.

Do it! I am so GLAD that someone is planning an event for families. We need to come together in such a crumbling country & world! Create opportunities for families---our children and adults to have clean fun and great foods! the cost is fine for adults. Do children 12 and under have to pay? It would be a great gesture to allow 2 children to enter free with every adult who wish to take advantage of this event. The Charlotte event was awesome and I plan to go each year! Hats off to the coordinator for thinking of others in Georgetown, surrounding communities and those who will be visiting from other states! If it didn't cost $20 to get in I would love to go. I think that is a bit much. I think there would be a better turn out if they charged an admission fee and then each person paid for their own food seperatly. Posted by ? on 9/25/2008 |
