"It was a heart-breaker" of a loss, Waccamaw boys' coach Mike Quinn said after Friday's loss to Hanahan.

His boys' team loss 45-37 to Hanahan came on the heels of the girls' loss by a score of 48-31.

Leading the way

Waccamaw's Warriors and the tribe of students who filled the home side of the gym were pumped up, loud and enthusiastic as the boys' varsity led through the first three quarters of the game.

The team was up by one point at the end of the first quarter, 10-9, and at half-time the score was 22-14.

After the break the Warriors continued to lead -- narrowly -- through the third quarter, 28-26. Waccamaw scored 6 points compared to 12 for Hanahan.

It was in the final period that Hanahan's War Eagles swooped past the Warriors, scoring 19 points to just 9 for Waccamaw.

As the clock wound down, the Warriors kept trying but just weren't able to match the Berkeley County visitors, losing 54-37.

Officiating

While it wasn't just the officiating, an obviously frustrated Quinn didn't feel like his Warriors got a fair shake.

"To play as hard as we do and then have ridiculous calls and they don't let you play the game. It's absolutely ridiculous," Quinn said.

"The kids play their hearts out. They deserve better."

There's no point in filing any sort of protest, though, Quinn added.

"It was just bad calls.

"We should have been better."

The calls "really took the flow from our game. We couldn't get any rhythm."

"We didn't execute offensively. We didn't make the shots.

"We had our looks," Quinn said. "We didn't make them."

Leading scorers

Joey Alba didn't scalp anyone, but led the Warriors with a game-high 15 points. Alex Jessmore added 13; Sammy Greene 4; Kevin Gardener 2; and Joey Walton 2.

For Hanahan, Carlos Feroni was tops at 10 points, followed by Jordan Denmark and Mike Forrester with 8 each; Mike Horowitz 6; Travis Aiken 3; Paul Smith 2; and Jalen Williams 3.
