Ben Grant is a good athlete and leading scorer for the Georgetown High School boys' varsity basketball team.

"He's a well-rounded student," coach Alvin "Stitch" Walker says as he describes the senior shooting guard.

"He's a member of the cross-country team and is very good at it. He will be on the track team this year. He's well-mannered."

Also, Walker continued, Grant was selected for Boys' State and has been a hard worker in the basketball program for the last four years.

"Ben just had a limited role on the team, but since regional play started, he's been the leading scorer on the team."

Why basketball?

"I've always played in my neighborhood, all through my childhood," Grant said.

"I like all sports."

When he gets home from practice or a game, "I turn the channel to ESPN and watch basketball."

As the season continues, Grant says he's more relaxed now and that helps him score better.

Also, "My teammate Avery (Evans) was out, so I stepped up."

His "high" for the year was when the Bulldogs almost beat Myrtle Beach on Jan. 26.

Another good night was when he scored 15 points against Lake City, had 5 steals and 6 rebounds.

"I don't know what got into me. I just did it," he said with a big grin.

Grant's mom Lisa lives in Charleston and his dad Benjamin lives in Maryville.

"I ran this season and last season. I was one of the top in the region," Grant said. He was a nominee for "Toast of the Coast."

After high school graduation, Grant is thinking about running cross-country at Winthrop University. He's looking to major in sports medicine, and would like to be an athletic trainer.

"I just want to be around sports," he said.
