Streiffert gets 350th win at Waccamaw
By Chris Sokoloski
The Waccamaw High softball team’s 5-4 win over Dillon on April 12 was the team’s 14th in a row, and the 350th for coach Scott Streiffert at the school.
Add in two years of coaching at West Columbus High School in Cerro Gordo, N.C., and Streiffert has an impressive career record of 360-130.
He still loves coaching as much now as he did when he started 23 years ago.
“I love the coaching part of it,” he said. “I love being out there and interacting with the kids.
And he loves just being at the field.
“My whole life, the one place I could go for peace and tranquility was the ballfield,” Streiffert said.
The high point of Streiffert’s career came on May 21, 2010, when the Lady Warriors beat Crescent to win the Class AA state championship.
“I’d trade every one of those 350 wins for that day,” Streiffert said. “It was the best game ever in my career. The best team effort we ever had.”
It was sweet revenge for Waccamaw, after losing to Crescent in the state finals the year before.
The 2009 team won 30 games in a row; the 2010 team won 33 in a row.
After winning the state championship, Streiffert predicted it would take a few years to reload the team and compete for another title.
The team went 16-13 in 2011 and 19-12 in 2012. This year’s squad is 22-3.
Six years ago Streiffert started a summer softball camp for youngsters. Several girls who were at the first camp are now impact players on the varsity squad.
When Waccamaw beat Dillon two weeks ago, Streiffert said that was the happiest he’s been about a win since the state championship game.
He was especially happy for his three seniors – Riley Morris, Melaina Moore and Sam Leonard – who had endured subpar sophomore and junior seasons.
“For those guys to have that feeling again I thought was really cool,” he said.
Streiffert, who is also an assistant football coach, has no immediate plans to retire, but doesn’t see himself coaching for 30 or 40 years.
“I’ve enjoyed every minute of it,” he said. “As long as I enjoy it and my health is good I think I’ll continue.” ?
