Trailing Conway High School by seven points going into the last match of the night last week, Georgetown High wrestling coach Sean Griffin knew the best he could hope for was a pin by Juwan Gibbs, which would give the Bulldogs six points.
What he didn't expect was Gibbs' opponent to be disqualified for unsportsmanlike conduct for disrespecting the referee, and for the referee to take three points away from Conway.
The point swing gave Georgetown the 38-36 victory.
"Overall we matched up well with Conway and even though we won on a technicality, we wrestled very well against them," Griffin said. "We are proving every match that we can compete with other teams."
Larry Wells (152) and Dalton Shearer (138) won by pins for Georgetown, Jamel Smith and Jalil Smith won on points, and Terrell Collins (152) and Nick Cooper (285) won by forfeit.
Georgetown also got a win over Military Magnet, 57-24, last week, along with losses to Waccamaw, 54-21, and St. James, 77-0.
Against Military Magnet, Dustin Pack (135 pounds) won by pin, Deion Windley (126) and Jeremy Drayton (138) won on points, and Wells, Chris Childers (120), Juwan Gibbs (170), Jamel Smith (182), Jalil Smith (195), Christopher Mau (220) and Tyrone Canteen (225) all won by forfeit.
"Military Magnet brought only six wrestlers with them," Griffin said. "Where we did match up and wrestle, we as a team wrestled well."
Against Waccamaw, Windley, Gibbs and Jamel Smith all won by pins.
"This was a tough loss, obviously with Waccamaw we want to be more competitive," Griffin said. "They have a good team and are coached very well. We as a team need to bring more intensity and urgency to our matches."
Georgetown was winless against St. James.
"This was a good measuring stick to see how we stack up to the best in the state," Griffin said. "There is a reason why St. James is ranked No. 1 in the state right now and they came out incredibly prepared."
