After a three-year absence, horses have returned to the Wachesaw Equestrian Center in Murrells Inlet.
Kathleen Mills and Brent Thurlo, both Inlet residents, took over the center on a lease-to-own basis about a month go. It used to be part the amenities for Wachesaw Plantation owners.
The facility has a barn, riding rings and grazing areas, and offers individual and group lessons, boarding, clinics and leasing.
Mills is a certified U.S. Equestrian Federation judge and holds licenses in hunter, hunter equitation, jumpers and hunter breeding.
She oversees the facility's riding programs and works with advanced students.
Thurlo is the head western trainer and specializes in teaching trail riding.
Jane Gailey, barn manager and assistant trainer, competes nationally in hunters and jumpers shows.
Jenny Rosner, the lead assistant trainer, competes nationally in hunters and equitation.
"As far as English [riding], there's nobody in the area at the level of Jenny and I," Mills said. "I'm hoping we can bring this area to a national level."
There are currently five horses at Wachesaw Equestrian: Bouncer, an Appaloosa gelding; Halo, a paint gelding; Snappy Dresser, a paint mare; Mustang Sally, a bay American warmblood mare; Roxy Lady, a Welsh pony; Jimminy Cricket, a paint pony; and Chief, a gelding.
Mills, Thurlo, Gailey and Rosner are all working hard to get the facility ready for the grand reopening on Aug. 1.
Group classes start Aug. 15; trail riding classes begin Sept. 1.
The Wachesaw Equestrian Center is hosting an open house on July 28 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. The center is on New River Road, next to Murrells Inlet-Garden City Fire Station 78 in Murrells Inlet.
