Carvers Bay High's girls basketball team was held to three points in the third quarter in a 69-36 loss to Latta last week.

"We definitely played with no heart," Bears coach Joe Epps said. "We came out as flat as a pancake and the score shows it."

Carvers Bay kept the game close in the first half, only trailing 18-10 at the end of the first quarter and 28-21 at the end of the second.

But with two Bears starters in foul trouble - Jasmine Waites and Jasmine Eady - the Vikings outscored the Bears 23-3 in the third quarter and 18-12 in the fourth to seal the victory.

"We need to stop playing cute and play ugly," Epps said. "That's what wins games."

Jasmine Cobb led the Bears with 11 points. Desaree Green added 10.

"We have the basic fundamentals down, we just don't have the heart," Epps said. "If they played with heart they'd win every game."

The Lions kept the game close in the second half, cutting the lead to 11 and outscoring the Fighting Marlins 19-11 in the fourth quarter, but Lowcountry Prep held on for its second region win of the season.

"It was a big win for the team, they showed a lot of heart and hustle and it paid off with many transition baskets," Lowcountry Prep coach Danny Bell said. "Beating a rival is always is great, we have great respect for James Island who has made the last three state championship games. We look forward to building on this night."

Freshman Sydney Derrick led the Fighting Marlins with 20 points and 15 rebounds. Rachael Exum had 16 points, and Leldon McClary had 15 points, 12 rebounds and seven of the team's 22 steals.

The Fighting Marlins offense was set up by a strong performance on defense by Elizabeth Zieser
