Despite a 1 hour and 15 minute delay in getting starting, the annual Pawleys Island Kayak Races were once again a success, according to Scott Benston.
"It was great conditions and a great turnout," said Benston, founder of Surf the Earth and race organizer. "Everybody was happy. We had some great times."
The races were supposed to start at 3 p.m. on July 18, but the level of Pawleys Creek was very low. Once the tide came in and water started rise, Benston waited a little longer for some of the competitors to return.
He said most of the adult events had a lot of racers, but there seemed to be fewer kids competing than in years past. And fewer spectators.
Benston has been organizing the race for 12 years and has seen a lot of the same people compete every year.
"People still plan their vacations around it," he said.
And he's seen adults competing who first start racing when they were just kids.
"It's always a very fun, family event," Benston said..
