Georgetown's Bulldogs boys' varsity basketball team won both its games last week, notching a spot for itself in regional play-offs.
The notch was cut deep when Georgetown won Friday over North Myrtle Beach, 64-54.
On Tuesday, GHS started cutting the notch when it won 50-31 over St. James.
St. James
It was kind of magical to watch Marcus Archie at the free throw line in Tuesday's game against St. James.
Early in the fourth quarter he went to the line three times. He'd aim the ball, picture it going through the hoop, shoot and in it would go -- hardly disturbing the net in the process.
After making the first point, while waiting for the ref to toss him the ball, he'd practice -- imagining the ball going through the hoop.
Then he'd do it again.
Of the six shots in that brief span of time, Archie made five points.
As a team, Georgetown was 19 for 32 from the free throw line.
"Everyone got in scoring," coach Stitch Walker said. "Some of the young boys were scoring." The three JV boys who moved up to varsity scored 12 points.
Walker said the guys played good defense, only giving up 31 points while scoring 50 points.
"I've got a lot of pride in them. They work hard, practice their free throws."
Walker noted that Jadia Johnson had 14 rebounds. "He controlled the boards." One of the former JV players, Anthony Blair, added six rebounds for the team.
"I've told the team there might be people doubting us, but if we believe in ourselves, anything is possible."
North Myrtle Beach
On Friday, the Bulldogs won 64-54 over North Myrtle Beach.
Avery Evans led Georgetown with 14 points, followed by Ben Grant with 13; Tevin Johnson 8; Jervay Muhamad 10; Jadia Johnson 2; A.J. Walker 2; Terry Johnson 6; Marcus Archie 5; and Anthony Blair 4.
NMB led 21-18 at the half, but the Georgetown team came back and scored 46 points to 33 for NMB.
For NMB Gray Wilson and Timmane Bellamy each scored 16 points.
"We were losing at half-time. I told the guys we have to have a good third quarter because the other team was high," Walker said. "They also came back after a big lead against Lake City."
"Tevin Johnson had an all-around game, with 8 points, 10 assists and 9 rebounds. That was close to a triple double for a point guard."
"We sealed our play-off spot with the win," Walker said. "Now we're going to continue playing hard."
