GHS’ Gibson raising money to play in Australian tournament
By Chris Sokoloski
Georgetown High School junior Dae’Quan Gibson has been invited to travel to Australia in July to play basketball with a team of U.S. players.
“An opportunity like this means the world for me,” Gibson said. “I put in so much time and so much effort into preparing myself not only mentally but physically.”
Gibson, who has been playing basketball for about nine years, said the trip would give him an opportunity to expand his horizons and bond with players from around the country.
His invitation to join the East Central Conference Boys Basketball team came by mail.
“Words couldn’t explain how excited I was,” Gibson said. “I was like a little kid at Christmas.”
Along with his two years of varsity experience at Georgetown, Gibson has been playing AAU basketball for four years.
“AAU puts you in different situations,” Gibson said. “You learn more than just the game of basketball. It teaches you how to gell [with teammates] quicker, as far as reading people from a personal standpoint.”
The next step for Gibson is to raise the money to help his parents pay for the trip. Gibson has been talking to members of his church, First Calvary in Georgetown, and reaching out to other pastors in the area.
His parents have also been fundraising at their jobs and in their communities.
The deadline for donations to help Gibson pay for the trip is June 1.
