Warriors fifth at Champions Challenge
Waccamaw High School’s boys tennis team hosted the Champions Challenge at Stables Park last week.
Two North Carolina teams, Cardinal Gibbons and Cape Fear, took the top two spots after two days of competition. Both teams won state titles last year.
Other teams competing were: Socastee, R.J. Reynolds, which also won a state title last year, and Spartanburg.
Waccamaw battled through lightning and rain delays to beat Socastee 5-2 in the opening round on Friday.
Matt Fisher, Joey Hewes, Alex Czechner and Jaz Greene all scored singles victories, and Ben Hewes and Woody Tudor won at doubles.
After being swept by Cardinal Gibbons in round two, Greene picked up Waccamaw’s only victory against R.J. Reynolds in round three.
Fisher in singles and Ben Hewes and Tudor in doubles got Waccamaw’s two victories against Spartanburg in round four.
Missing its juniors and seniors due to the prom, Waccamaw lost in the final round to Cape Fear. Justin Dunn won the only singles match and teamed with Ben Hewes to also pick up a doubles win.
Waccamaw finished fifth overall.
The Warriors were coming off a 5-1 win over Myrtle Beach.
Dunn won 6-0, 6-0 at No. 1 singles; Fisher won 6-0, 6-1 at No. 2; Joey Hewes won 6-0, 6-0 at No. 3; Czechner won 6-0, 6-0 at No. 4; Greene lost 3-6, 6-2 (11-9) at No. 5; and Woody Tudor and Ben Hewes won 6-2, 6-3 in doubles.
