Carvers Bay's boys basketball lost 54-48 to Latta last week, its first region defeat of the season.

"This is one we let get away," Bears coach Jeff Mezzatesta said. "When you can beat a region opponent on the road you've got to do it."

The teams played evenly in the first half, with the Vikings leading 9-5 at the end of the first quarter and 19-16 at the half.

The Bears scored the first seven points of the second half, but the Vikings battled back to lead 33-27 at the end of the third quarter and held off the Bears for the victory.

"Too many mistakes; we're better than that," Mezzatesta said. "When we play defense we can stop people. When we don't play defense we can't."

Teondre Bromell and Rayshod Pittman led the Bears with 13 points each. Da'Shawn Aiken had 12 points and Walter Linnen added five.

Andrews High's boys team battled Kingstree, the 10th ranked Class AA team in the state, last week, but fell 53-48.

The Jaguars led 12-11 at the end of the first half, 27-21 at the half and 45-36 at the end of the third quarter.

The Yellow Jackets made a run and outscored the Jaguars 12-8 in the fourth, but couldn't catch them in the end.

Travis Collins led Andrews with 15 points and 15 rebounds. Monte McCrea had 10 points and 11 rebounds, D.J. Lawrence had eight points, Ervin Heard had five points, and Neal Pope and Rodquel Davis had four points each.

Andrews (7-10) hosts Timberland tonight.

Waccamaw High's boys team lost 58-42 to Mullins last week.

The undefeated Auctioneers are the top ranked Class AA team in the state.

The Warriors trailed 15-9 at the end of the first quarter, but kept the game close in the second and third, outscoring the Auctioneers 14-13 in the third. But Mullins closed out the game with a 17-7 advantage in the fourth.

"I was very happy with our overall performance against the No. 1 team in the state and I would love to see us play with this type of effort for the rest of the season," Waccamaw coach Mike Quinn said.

Noah Gulley had 14 points and 11 rebounds to lead the Warriors. A.J. Grant had 11 points, Blake Dwyer had nine, and Dejan Frazier had seven.
