Carvers Bay won out over the Waccamaw Warriors Friday by a score of 26-14.
"Sometimes, we are our own worst enemy," long-time coach Nate Thompson said of his Bears.
But a big bright spot was a school record 99-yard touchdown run by Tevin Richard.
He also had two other TDs. Tyrone Brown added a fourth touchdown to give the Bears a win.
In the first half of the game, the Bears led 13-0. Waccamaw got a safety in the third period while Richard made his 99-yard run in that same quarter, so the score was 20-2.
In the fourth period Waccamaw managed a pair of touchdowns by Nick Davis and Richard made his third TD of the night for Carvers Bay.
There was a pretty spectacular ""high school league football follies" in that fourth quarter, on the way to Davis' TD.
There was a fumble, followed by another and another ... it was hard to tell just how many fumbles.
But, at the end of that play Davis had scooped up the ball and -- with help from both Bears and Warriors -- advanced the ball 54 yards for a fumble return touchdown.
Tough lessons
The Bears' coach Thompson said both teams fought hard.
"They did a lot of things that hurt us. It was good for us to see. We have to come to play. We're still mistake-prone," he said. "We've got to work on some things to get better."
Injuries make it tough for a team, but they also help find new people who can play at different positions, Thompson said, "so it's a good thing too."
The Bears are beginning to jell, he said. "The kids are beginning to understand we are a family."
When faced with tough situations, they buckle down pretty well.
"The kids believe in themselves."
Waccamaw
"It was a hard-fought game," Waccamaw coach Tyronne Davis said. "It was exciting -- probably more exciting for them than for us."
"Our kids never gave up. They fought the entire game. That's something we've stressed all season, that sometimes we will get down some."
Waccamaw's defense played well.
"We gave up some key plays to Carvers Bay and Tevin Richard," Davis said.
"Coach Thompson prepared his kids well. I know him and his philosophy. It's simple, ultimately. You've got to line up and stop 'em."
As for what Thompson called the "football follies," or the ongoing series of fumbles, Nick Davis got a touchdown out of it for the Warriors.
He's a transfer to Waccamaw this year.
"He spotted the ball, scooped it up and scored. It was just a great play," coach Davis said.
"He just came out of nowhere, and scored."
Nick Davis also made the other touchdown for Waccamaw, coach Davis said, and outside linebacker Nick Franza tackled a Carvers Bay player in the end zone for a safety.
"It was a good game between two county schools," Davis said. "Coach Thompson and his staff were well prepared. We enjoyed it. It was a great game, an exciting game.
"Maybe it's a tradition we can start with Carvers Bay."
