Bears and Warriors pick up region wins

Here's a wrapup of the recent high school boys basketball action.

Carvers Bay

A dominant first half propelled the Bears to a 74-54 victory over Green Sea-Floyds on Tuesday night.

Carvers Bay led 21-12 at the end of the first quarter and 41-26 at the half. The Trojans rallied in the third to cut the lead to 54-35, but the Bears held of for their fifth Region VIII win of the season.

Da'Shawn Aiken and Teondre Bromell led Carvers Bay with 24 points each. Walter Linnen had nine points and Rayshod Pittman had seven.

Bromell was named one of the "Fabulous Five" for the week of Jan. 9 by the Coastal Basketball Coaches Association. The senior is averaging 18 points and eight rebounds per game.

Waccamaw

The Warriors picked up thier first Region VIII win of the season, a 50-37 victory over Aynor on Tuesday night.

Aynor led 10-9 at the end of the first quarter and 23-21 at the half, but Waccamaw held the Blue Jackets in single digits in the third and fourth quarters for the victory.

Dejan Frasier and A.J. Grant combined for 30 points and 4 steals to led the Warriors. Noah Gulley had seven points and nine assists, and Trevor Newbauer had six points.

Andrews

The Yellow Jackets lost 67-47 to two-time defending Region VII champion Timberland on Jan. 13.

Monte McCrea led Andrews with 14 points. Rodquel Davis had 11 points, Travis Collins had 10, Ervin Heard had five and Neal Pope had four.

Georgetown

A turnover in the closing seconds cost the Bulldogs in a 52-51 loss to North Myrtle Beach on Tuesday night.

"It was a back-and-forth game," Bulldogs coach Alvin Walker said. "But they made one more play than we made and it was the difference in the game."

Georgetown led 12-10 after the first quarter but North Myrtle Beach came back to tie the score at 24-24 at the half.

The Chiefs dominated the third quarter and led 42-35 going into the fourth. The Bulldogs outscored the Chiefs 15-10 in the fourth, but North Myrtle Beach capitalized on the late turnover to win the game.

Georgetown has lost three straight region games by a total of four points.

"After losing that first region game at home and then go on the road for three games we put ourselves in a hole," Walker said. "It's time for us to get hot before it's too late for us to get hot. We're right there. I hope they understand that."

A.J. Walker led Georgetown with 19 points, 12 rebounds and six steals. Anthony Blair had eight points, Dae Quan Gibson had seven, Marquise Besselieu had six, Tevin Johnson had five and Aiswan Nelson had four.
