Greene rgreene@gtowntimes.com ORANGEBURG - Coming into Friday's Class A Division I championship game, it was Chesterfield's passing game that garnered most of the attention. But as the Rams proved at Oliver C. Dawson Stadium, they can run and play defense as well. Derrick McQueen rushed for 161 yards and the defense allowed only 119 yards as the Rams took the measure of Carvers Bay 21-0 to win their second consecutive crown - it was the third straight year Chesterfield (13-1) and the Bears have met in the finale. Though stung by the loss, Carvers Bay coach Nate Thompson counseled his team afterward, saying the loss did not overshadow what was a successful season. Greene rgreene@gtowntimes.com The running game has always been the calling card for Carvers Bay's offense. Through the years, backs like Sammy Milton, Malcolm Elder and Jonathan Holmes have established themselves as part of the Bears football tradition. Now, it's junior Clayton Geathers' turn. A converted wide receiver, Geathers paces an offense that averages more than 24 points per game, rushing for 1,401 yards and scoring 23 touchdowns. Proving he remains a viable threat catching the ball, he also has a team-high 208 yards receiving. But facing a battery of local media before the Bears practice on Wednesday afternoon, Geathers was quick to point out that he's not a one-man show. Greene rgreene@gtowntimes.com With running back Clayton Geathers leading the way, the Carvers Bay High football team is headed back to Orangeburg. Geathers accumulated 345 yards of total offense and accounted for five scores on Friday as the Bears routed Lamar 40-14 to win their third consecutive Class A Division I Lower State Championship. "It's a blessing," Geathers said. "I owe it all to the offensive line and (running backs) Davious (Chestnut) and Andre (Aklin). They did a great job blocking and made it all possible." The win sets up a rubber match with Chesterfield for the state title this weekend at South Carolina State's Oliver C. Dawson Stadium. Waccamaw High's Joey Alba scored 25 points in his team's opening game, a 70-60 loss to C.E. Murray on Friday. Andrews High's Stefon Collins scored 24 points in an 83-70 loss Saturday against Stall. With the cold weather hitting hard this past week I am sure some of the fair weather fisherman are putting their boats up. DON"T DO IT! This is the time to get out and do more fishing. Bundle up grab a kid and take them fishing. Inshore: Trout and red fish are out there. I was out last week, and we caught some monster red fish off the Georgetown Jetties. We were just using basic bottom rigs with pieces of blue crab. The air is cold, but the water has a decent temperature to keep the fish moving. Grey trout at the Georgetown reef seem to be in the mix as well. In McClellanville, Capt. George Gallagher was able to land several fish using artificial bait and as ... 11/20/2008 http://www.gtowntimes.com/story/fishing-with-richard-powers-
Lower State finals:

Bears host Lamar
http://www.gtowntimes.com/story/cb-vs--lamar By R.G. Greene rgreene@gtowntimes.com Before the 2008 football season began, the question Carvers Bay coach Nate Thompson had was about timing. He knew his team had the potential to be good, but how long would it take for a plethora of first-year starters to jell with new coordinators Binky Rankin (offense) and Quinton McCollum (defense). The answer came promptly as the Bears won five consecutive games to start the season. After a two-game slide in the middle of the year, Carvers Bay (10-2) has recovered, putting together another five-game winning streak to set up tonight's Class A Division I Lower State championship against visiting Lamar (8-3). Greene rgreene@gtowntimes.com The high school basketball season tips off this weekend with the 14th annual Georgetown Dental/Inlet Dental shootout at Georgetown. The event - which starts this Friday - features county teams Georgetown, Andrews and Waccamaw plus Hemingway, Hannah-Pamplico, C.E. Murray, Stall and Lincoln. Georgetown coach Stitch Walker is pleased with the field, especially the inclusion of Waccamaw, which is returning to the tournament after an absence of several years. "It's great that we can feature three teams from Georgetown County," Walker said. "It's been a few years since Waccamaw was here. Greene rgreene@gtowntimes.com HEMINGWAY - It was just a basic isolation play. A straight downhill call where the offensive line fires out and the running back goes right at the opposing defense. It's been a staple for Clayton Geathers and the Carvers Bay offense. And there haven't been many times where they've run it better than they did on Friday night, facing a fourth and goal from the one-yard line, late in the fourth quarter at Hemingway. Geathers' run was the game's only touchdown, a burst that lifted the Bears to a 10-2 victory in the second round of the Class A Division I playoffs and sent them on to the Lower State championship this Friday for the third consecutive year, hosting Lamar, a 54-0 winner over Hannah ... 11/18/2008 http://www.gtowntimes.com/story/cb-vs---hemingway-
Bears, Tigs heat rivalry
http://www.gtowntimes.com/story/hemingway-vs--cbhs- By R.G. Greene rgreene@gtowntimes.com The rivalry between the Carvers Bay and Hemingway High football teams gets a new twist tonight when, for the first time, the squads will square off in the postseason. With the schools being located less than 12 miles apart, the rivalry between the two is a natural and has become one of the more acclaimed matchups in the Grand Strand/Pee Dee area. The series history reflects that with Carvers Bay holding a slim 5-4 advantage all time and only one of those games - Carvers Bay's 41-18 win in 2005 - being decided by more than 14 points. And the stakes of tonight's Class A Division I second-round playoff game have magnified the rivalry even more. Both new Waccamaw coach James Brown and Robert Burdette - who coached the Lady Warriors the past three seasons - believe St. Andrews has acquired a player capable of making an immediate impact. "I think Briana will fit in very well," Brown said. "She'll have an opportunity to earn a lot of playing time. Her best days are in front of her. Basketball is her passion." Greene rgreene@gtowntimes.com With the schools located roughly 11 miles apart, the rivalry between Carvers Bay and Hemingway already is one of the best in the Grand Strand/Pee Dee area. This Friday at Hemingway things will be amplified even more when - for the first time - the teams will meet in the postseason, clashing in the second round of the Class A Division I playoffs. "With the two schools being so close, there is always a lot of interest any time we play," Carvers Bay coach Nate Thompson said. "It's a healthy rivalry and, with both schools having reached the second round, I think (Friday's game) will be a good thing for the area."
