The South Carolina Highway Patrol says it appears the driver of a tanker truck crossed the center line causing an accident involving three vehicles that killed a Georgetown woman Monday morning.
The accident happened at about 5:30 a.m. on Highway 521, at Wheeler Road, west of Andrews, according to S.C. Highway Patrol Lance Cpl. Sonny Collins.
Williamsburg County Coroner Harrison McKnight said 28-year-old Latres Rachell Coffield of Montford Drive in Maryville was killed in the accident.
According to Collins, the tanker truck, carrying a load of Asatate was eastbound on Highway 521 when, for reasons not yet known, the driver crossed the center line. That truck then hit the empty trailer of another 18-wheeler and then struck the Honda Accord being driven by Coffield.
She was alone in her vehicle when the accident occurred.
The acid from the tanker spilled into the highway causing a detour that lasted all day and into Monday night.
As of 10:30 p.m. Monday, that portion of Highway 521 was still closed. Traffic was being rerouted to Seaboard Street and then towards the Trio area.
