Police charge woman with her husband's 2003 murder

Nearly five-and-a-half years after a Georgetown County Detention Center Corrections Officer was shot to death inside his home, Georgetown Police have arrested his wife for the crime.
Keri Pope, 23, was apprehended Tuesday morning at her home in McClellanville.
She is charged with murder and conspiracy to commit murder in connection with the May 27, 2003, slaying of her husband, 21-year-old Joseph “Joey” M. Pope Jr., said Georgetown Police spokesman Capt. Nelson Brown.
Pope had been an officer at the Georgetown County Detention Center for about one month and was in the certification process when he was killed.
Keri Pope is being kept at the J. Reuben Long Detention Center in Conway where she will await a bond hearing in front of a Circuit Court judge.
Brown said police believe they know the motive for the murder.
“I am not going to get into that right now,” he said Tuesday when asked about the motive.
Earlier this year, Police Chief Paul Gardner beefed up the investigation into the case by making it the main duty of Investigator Glenn Kufen.
Brown said having Kufen’s undivided attention is one of the reasons the case was finally solved.
“He was assigned to go through the entire case. He conducted followup interviews and some new interviews,” Brown said.
According to Joey Pope’s father, Mack Pope, a crime scene investigative unit from Conway went to the 2502 Highmarket Street home recently and spent about six hours going through the house collecting any evidence they could find.
Last week, investigators met with Solicitor Greg Hembree and Assistant Solicitor Dorie Biagianti and presented the evidence that had been collected.
“They told us we needed to get warrants signed (against Keri Pope),” Brown said without elaborating on the evidence.
It’s unknown whether the evidence presented includes video tape taken at Pope’s funeral.
At the time, Brown said the funeral was taped so investigators would have a record of who attended. He said it was done “to see who put in an appearance or who should have put in an appearance and didn’t put in an appearance.”
He denied rumors the cameras were aimed at Keri Pope to capture her reactions during the service.
Biagianti said the earliest Pope will have bond hearing is Dec. 15. It will be up to her attorney whether she has one that week.
She said Pope, if found guilty, could receive 30 years up to life in prison.
Pope does have a criminal history, although, until now, none of the charges were of this magnitude.
According to the S.C. Law Enforcement Division, she was convicted of possession of drug paraphernalia in August, 2004. She received a $862 fine or 30 days in jail.
That same year she was convicted of contributing to the delinquency of a minor and received an 18-month sentence, suspended to one year probation. She had other drug convictions in 2005.
The Charleston County Sheriff’s Office assisted Georgetown Police as they made the arrest Tuesday morning.

Keri Pope: It was a home invasion
On the night of the shooting, Keri Pope told police there was a knock on their door at about 11:30 p.m. She said when she opened the door a man began asking about a pickup truck that was for sale in their front yard.
She said as they were talking, a second man forced his way inside and then one of the men grabbed her by the neck and pushed her backward.
One of the men ran into the bedroom where Joey Pope was sleeping and shot him four times, Keri Pope said. The family’s pit bull was also shot to death.
She told police the killers ran out a back door and either down Highmarket Street or behind some adjacent businesses.
Keri Pope said both she and their daughter, Zoey, were unharmed.
Brown would not say whether or not investigators believe Keri Pope’s version of events.
“If that is her story, then she let them in to do what was done,” Brown said. When asked if that meant other arrests will be made, Brown said “it’s possible.”
He said it is believed Pope conspired with someone in connection with her husband’s murder. He would not say if she was the one who pulled the trigger.
In 2004, Brown told the Georgetown Times the hands of both Joey and Keri Pope were tested for gunpowder residue and both tests came back negative.
There was no evidence to indicate there was any type of struggle on the night of the shooting, police said at the time.
Mack Pope said during recent months, investigators questioned him about almost everything in their quest to solve the case.
“They even wanted to know if he slept on his back or stomach,” Mr. Pope said.

         The news was bittersweet
For five years, Mack and Velma Pope have relentlessly prodded investigators to keep the case of their son’s murder active. They went so far as to have signs placed on the back of their vehicles urging anyone with information about their son’s murder to call police.
When reached by phone at his home about 30 minutes after he learned of the arrest, Mack Pope was in tears.
“I don’t know whether to be happy or sad,” he said as he regained his composure. He said he is glad there is finally closure but is sad that the suspect is his daughter-in -law, even though people have always believed she was responsible.
He said one of the first priorities will be to decide who will take care of their granddaughter now that her mother is in jail.
“It’s way too early to say what will happen there,” he said.
Pope, who has had strong words for the Georgetown Police Department in the past because of what he perceived as inaction in he case, said he believes it has now been solved because there is a new chief in charge.
Gardner was hired by the city in October, 2007.
“When Gardner came along, he was a more strict man and he pulls the shots in his department. He started lining things up,” Mack Pope said. “I know Chief Gardner would not charge her unless he knows it will stick.”
Brown said other agencies have assisted with the investigation through the years including the Sheriff’s Office, the Coroner’s Office, the FBI, the County Organized Crime Bureau, Horry County Police, the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division and the Solicitor’s Office.
Pope said now that an arrest has been made, he plans to follow the case to its fruition.
“I want to know what happened to my boy. I want to know what happened to Joey,” he said.

To does it even matter: What kind of person are you to wish that a child should say such a thing? You are clearly deranged and should be kept far, far away from children. What is Hunter's last name???? One advantage he has.

...

: 12/5/2008
I think It's really sad that all of you ADULTS are sitting on here arguing back and forth about what she deserves more. Let me say one thing, WHEN she is proven guilty she will get everything she derves when Zoey looks her in the eyes and says "why did you kill my daddy?" No mother can live with that. BUT he has TWO children Hunter is also hurting just because his mom didn't kill him doesn't mean he doesn't need sympathy or anything else for that matter. He will go through just about every trail and tribulation that Zoey will except they won't say his mother is a murderer. May God Be with BOTH of these children. RIP JOEY WE MISS AND LOVE YOU SO MUCH!!!

I totally agree with BRING BACK THE HANGING TREE! It seems now a days, that you get way more time in jail or prison if you are busted for drugs, than you do for murder or child abuse. I think it is digusting. The judicial system needs to stop with the slap on wrist crap, and start with the eye for an eye. You take the life of someone else, and are found guilty, then why should you live. The hell with being on death row for 10 to 15 years......put a rush on it! It the world came to this, I guarantee the crime rate would drop dramatically!

on with the hanging tree!

: 12/4/2008
The presumption of innocence is one of the most basic in our system of justice. Guaranteeing the presumption of innocence extends beyond the judicial system. In many countries journalistic codes of ethics state that journalists should refrain from referring to suspects as though their guilt is certain. They use "suspect" or defendant" when referring to the suspect, and use "allegedly" when referring to the criminal activity that the suspect is accused of. Publishing the prosecutions case without proper defense argumentation constitutes presumption of guilt resulting in undeserved punishment since it damages the reputation of innocent suspects. I hope that someone is protecting this young woman and her family from the lynch mob mentality being fueled by comments on this web sight and by your article.

I think our hearts & prayers should not only go out to the Pope family, but also to Joey's little girl Zoey. There are many lessons to be learned here, but perhaps the most heartbreaking is the one facing this child. Now she has lost both of her parents and is facing a world of cruel uncertainty. She will always be plagued/scarred by the events that have happened. I think we should all aviod negativity until the case unravels for the little girls sake.If Keri is guilty, she should spent every waking moment, until she draws her last breath, in jail. If not society should try to move and help these families to heal.

: 12/4/2008
Again, in this country our judicial system is based on the presumption of innocence. I have read nothing that points to her as having done this. What reason did she have? What did she stand to gain?

Where is the proof?

: 12/3/2008
I think with all the shooting, stabbing, robbing and general wrong doing going on in Georgetown and the surrounding counties, we aught to nail a new limb on the hanging tree in Lambertown and put it back in use. Most of these people know that they are only going to get a slap on the wrist and be out doing it again in a matter of months. If they had to face that tree for their wrong doing, they would think twice before taking something that didn't belong to them, especially someone else's life. Also, killing a poor defenseless animal should be a hanging offense. I wish they would let me decide the fate of the one who did that, he'd be tied out on a fire ant bed.

Ok first no the Pope family didnt want it to be her but if she is who the police think did it then so be it. imagine how we feel, she has been walkin in and out of our house the past 5 years without sayin anything and it has hurt us that Joey was killed that way. i do love my aunt keri bc she is my aunt but if she did this i dont feel sympathy for her tuesday when they arrested her or on trail day because she knows what she did was wrong. and i do feel for her family because it wasnt what they could have wanted for their daughter. I love my uncle Joey and i miss him dearly! R.I.P. Uncle Joey!

To does it even matter, He may not have worked at the detention center long but he did work there. If someone was to die in the war that was only there for a week should get the same respect as if he had been there for years. Joey should get the respect that he deserves to. If it had not been for his murdering wife or girlfriend who's to say that he would not still be at the detention center or a police officer by now. A man was murdered in cold blood show him respect period,

TO THE POPE FAMILY, I PRAY THAT SOON JUSTICE WILL PREVAIL.THAT YOU CAN HAVE SOME CLOSEUR TO ALL THIS. AS FOR JOEYS WIFE IF YOU DID THIS YOU SHOULD COME FORTH AND TELL THE TRUTH.LIVING WITH SOMETHING LIKE THIS WOULD BE SO PAINFUL. BUT TO EVERYONE GOD STILL FORGIVES US IF WE ASK AND TRUELY ARE SORRY FOR THE THING WE DID. AS FOR HER FAMILY I KNOW THERE HEART IS BROKEN ALSO,YES TWO MOTHER'S AND TWO FATHER'S BOTH HAVE LOST SOMEONE VERY DEAR TO THEIR HEART.THIS WHOLE THING IS SO SAD FOR EVERYONE. MAY GOD BE WITH YOU ALL. AND I PRAY THAT JOEYS WIFE WILL FIND GOD IN HER TIME IN THIS WORLD.I DON'T WANT ANYONE TO BURN IN HELL. MAY GODS WILL BE DONE.

The night it all happened close friends knew something wasnt right, they were there at the hospital they saw her reaction was not that of one that had just watched their husband die. I would think they had some hard evidence on this, bc if it was just that they didnt believe her story than they would have arrested her 5 years ago. All those who dont believe she could have done it, sometimes we just dont understand why anyone does what they do. No one can explain it but the one at fault. I pray for the entire Pope and Fore family. I have spoken to Mr Mackie on serveral occasions on how he was anxious to get this solved. I dont believe he imagine this to be the outcome. But we all knew this was it! For Zoey sake I pray the Popes get her to raise as they have been doing!

As a member of the Pope family, we wish things were different and we are not beyond forgiveness. This tragedy will haunt us(both families) forever. I worry more about the child. She will loose her mother as well as her father. None of this is fair and all we want is justice not revenge. We still give her the benefit of the doubt even now. We all have waited a long time for this and we hope that justice will prevail whether she is guilty or not. All we can do now is pray.

The prosecution's theory rests on the notion that the defendant arranaged for her husband's murder, let the killers in, and concocted a story about murderers leaving a living witness. The obvious defense; she's not that stupid. If she arranged the killing, she'd have arranged a better alibi. So the trial will turn on whether she's clever enough to be a killer, but stupid enough to not go to the store while the deed was done. Lots of fun for jurors while they wrestle with the notion of reasonable doubt.

So lets get this straight. The police went to a house five years later to collect evidence. And to person that said they would not charge her if they could not convict her. Lets get real. I find it hard to believe five years later there is no doubt she did this. Let's see the facts and quit assuming. Again lets see the facts first because we do live in a country where you are innocent until proven guilty.

As a person / FRIEND who has known Joey for years, hung out and joked with, walked the halls of the schools with and cared so much for Joey I can honestly say that it is about time that the authorities have hopefully got enough evidence to not only arrest but to convict Keri. I knew Keri through school also and believe me, if she hasn't done some major changing since school then I feel that she was completely capable of having done this! God Bless Mrs.Thelma and Mr.Mackie I hope that you and your family finally get the closure that you all deserve! You both have worked so hard for this break in the case and now I can only hope that all of that hard work is finally going to pay off. Thinking of you all often! TJ L.

My heart went into a mode of sorrow,I wept as he shared the news. It brought back the trama of that day 5 1/2 years ago whe he was killed. My son and Joey were the best of friends. All I could think of at the moment the news of his death came was Mackie and Velma. Our families were close .Mackie & Velma We love you and pray God's will be done in this situation. I know this is a hard thing ,I can't even amagine what you have been through! I will be in prayer as I have for the 5 1/2 years past.

As a friend of the Pope family, I too am glad they are on the way to finding closure to such a tragic event. However, to those that feel the need to trash Joey or Keri please remember how hurtful your words and actions can be to the real victims here..TWO innocent children that will never see their daddy again and one that possibly has lost both parents. Instead of harsh words for these children to read and hear please replace them with PRAYER for the children, both families and friends.

I totally agree that she is a part(a big part) of this murder. Like someone posted earlier...why was she still alive if it happened the way she said it did. She was a witness. I said from the day it happened that something was not right with the story she was telling everyone and I do not even know them. To shoot someone 4 times..no signs of a struggle. You tell me - does that sound right to you? I feel for both families, because in the end they have both lost a child.

Hey, ppl, realize HE has a family, too. They have had to be silent and bear her fake behavior for 5 1/2 long suffering years, with a gut feeling that she did this. I think they DESERVE their say...whatever the words are and however it sounds. HIS family has suffered gravely. And her family DO know her, I'm sure...that is why they will have no problem empathizing with the Popes and all Joey's extended family. The truth will stand when the worlds on fire.

I think It's really really sad that these ppl have the least bit of sympathy for Keri. She knew then and she knows now exactly what happened that night. As for Zoey she hasn't had the least little thing to do with her except maybe taking her down the rd a time or two to say she had done something. It's just a way for her to collect the CHECK every month. Thank God she was blessed with the BEST PATERNAL grandparent EVER. If it wasn't for them there is no telling what would have happened to her. Mr. Lynn, Ms. Melanie, Billy & Jerry: Your holidays will never be the same. You will always remeber that your youngest child/little sister went to jail 2 days before Thanksgiving for a murder you surely don't feel she is responsible for. To: her/their child, it's a sad deal you got little one. No mommy or daddy to hug, kiss, play with or to walk you down the isle later in life. you will be well taken care of, you have many family members who love/care for you. you, like your mommy who was a little firey red head will not soon be forgotten. I pray for you all. And by the way...he wasn't a cop/police officer. He barely had been working at the jailhouse/detension center for 1 month. He wasn't even a cerified jailer yet. For those people that say she could not have done this because she is not that type of person, just how many people do you know that have killed people that you are comparing her to? You never know what someone will or won't do. The truth will come out in the trial and everyone will know what happened. She needs to start telling the truth now. Cop killers get the death penalty.
