Pawleys Island, S.C. — The Waccamaw Library will host a special event for parents and children this weekend in honor of National Library Card Sign-up Month.
The event is Saturday from 10 a.m. to noon and will encourage parents to sign up for library cards for themselves and their kids.
Parents must have a library card to get one for their child, because the accounts have to be linked.
Staff will have a sign-up table in the library’s public meeting room, along with entertainment and information about programs.
Each child who registers for a library card will also receive a free book. Other prizes will be given away throughout the program.
“We want to encourage people to use their public libraries, and to know we’re not just for books anymore,” said Carlethia Rudolph, Waccamaw Library branch manager. “There are so many other services we can offer them.”
Those services include access to e-books, digital audiobooks, magazines, computer services, and programs and services for children. Georgetown County libraries also offer free computer classes and assistance with résumé writing and job services.
Additionally, library card holders have access to the Small Business Center and Heritage Center at the county’s main branch in Georgetown, as well as materials from six other counties in a consortium with Georgetown.
