Sunbelt defers redevelopment plans for Pawleys Plaza

The redevelopment plan for Pawleys Plaza will not go before County Council next week.
The plan has been deferred at the request of the developer, Sunbelt Ventures of Mount Pleasant. First reading by title only is now scheduled for Nov. 13.
In a letter to Council Chairman Johnny Morant, Sunbelt’s lawyer, Gray Taylor of Buist, Byars and Taylor, said the developer received “valuable comments” from the public at a Planning Commission hearing Sept. 20, and wants to address those concerns with its design professionals and the county’s Planning Department staff.
Taylor’s letter also said the “vast majority” of the meeting centered on the public’s opinion of Walmart, even though Taylor reiterated that there is no agreement between Sunbelt and Walmart.
Dusty Wiederhold, a partner in Sunbelt, said he is not sure if the changes he is going to make to plan would have to go through the county Planning Department and Planning Commission again.
“It’s all kind of new right now,” Wiederhold said. “A month would give us enough time to get a better handle on what we need to do.”
Georgetown County Planning Director Boyd Johnson was unavailable for comment on Tuesday.
Before the plan goes to County Council, Weiderhold said Sunbelt will “refine our tenant mix and design, based on input from community, retailers and partners”; meet with all stakeholders, including the Don’t Box the Neck group; and “try to resolve different interpretations of county zoning ordinances and avoid a situation where Georgetown County becomes embroiled in expensive litigation over the project, as threatened by opposition.”
