Georgetown County is putting the finishing touches on a new recreation center and a new park in Pawleys Island and both will be ready for use in the spring.
Retreat Park, a $2 million facility located between Waccamaw Intermediate and Middle schools, is in the final stages of completion, according to Beth Goodale, director of county parks and recreation.
“We’re just letting the grass grow,” Goodale said.
Drivers on U.S. Highway 17 can see the two baseball fields and concession stand as they pass by the Bi-Lo shopping center.
The county will begin using the park for baseball programs in March. Several teams from the North have rented the facility for spring practice.
Farther south, the Waccamaw Regional Recreation Center at Parkersville Park should be ready for the county to start moving equipment and furniture in by the end of the month.
The $4.4 million center will have space for senior citizens programs, including a congregate dining area, locker rooms, a weight room, a climbing wall, and a gym for basketball and volleyball.
The county currently uses Waccamaw schools for basketball programs, but the new rec center will allow for more flexible scheduling.
Goodale said line dancing and art classes are already being scheduled for the new center.
