Georgetown County investigators say they are still trying to find out why a 28-year-old man broke into the home of  a Murrells Inlet couple and allegedly attacked them with a baseball bat early Tuesday.
According to an incident report, 28-year-old Marguis Slade entered the home in the 3700 block of Wacca Wache Drive at about 2 a.m. and then walked into the couple’s bedroom.
The report identifies Slade as an in-law of the victims.
He allegedly started hitting the woman and her husband with the bat until the male victim was able to fight him into a hallway.
At that point,  Slade allegedly started  hitting the couple with his fists.
As the struggle continued, a bottle of wine, a beer and a roll of duct tape fell out of Slade’s backpack. The items were still on the floor when deputies arrived.
Slade is also accused of threatening to kill the parents of the victims, so a welfare check on them was conducted and they were OK.
While the deputies were on the scene, they saw three vehicles outside the home of the victims that had been vandalized.
There were scratch marks down two of the vehicle and a profane word was carved into the hood of the third.
Slade left the scene but was apprehended a short time later at a house on Sherman Drive.
The female victim was transported to Waccamaw Community Hospital for treatment of minor lacerations.
Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman Lt. Amy Glover said no motive is known for the alleged attack.
Slade has been charged with assault and battery with intent to kill, burglary and malicious injury to personal property.
