The South Carolina Highway Patrol is still trying to determine what caused the driver of a pickup truck to pull into the path of an oncoming bus, causing one of the worst accidents in Pawleys Island in quite a while.
The truck driver of the 1997 Dodge pickup, 47-year-old Greg Smith of Ferguson Drive died after being transported to Waccamaw Community Hospital Tuesday night, according to County Deputy Coroner Sam Hodge.
Smith, a landscaper, is survived by a wife and three children.
The accident happened when Smith pulled onto Highway 17 from Club Isis, near Beaumont Drive, and was hit on the driver’s side by a Williamsburg County Transit Bus with 29 people on board Tuesday evening, according to S.C. Highway Patrol Lance Cpl. Bob Beres.
He said it’s unknown if Smith was wearing a seat belt.
Altogether, 13 people were taken to hospitals in Georgetown and Horry counties.
Bob Beebe, spokesman for Midway Fire Rescue said one other person was in critical condition Tuesday evening. That person’s current condition was unavailable Thursday.
The bus, which was traveling south when the accident occurred, did have a surveillance camera and the tape has been reviewed as part of the investigation.
Midway Fire was assisted by Murrells Inlet, Horry County and Georgetown City and County.
