Surviving are a son, Dennis Bader of Maryland; a daughter, Debra Busch of Garden City; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Charles H. Cooper
Charles Henry Cooper, 81, of Georgetown, widower of Gertrude McClary Cooper, died Tuesday, July 1, 2008, at his residence.
Funeral services with military recognition were Thursday, July 3, 2008, at 5 p.m. at Screven Baptist Church in Georgetown. McKenzie Funeral Home, Georgetown Chapel, is in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Cooper was born in Blakeley, S.C., a son of the late A.G. Cooper Sr. and Claudia Taylor Cooper of Salters. He retired from International Paper Company, Georgetown mill, after 40 years of service and was a life member of the Trio United Methodist Church. He was the owner of Cooper's Hunt Club and an avid outdoorsman. Mr. Cooper served his tenure in the United State military during World War II as a sergeant in the Army. He was drafted in the 10th grade, came out of the military, went back to school and graduated from Williamsburg High School.
He was predeceased by a brother, A.G. Cooper Jr. of Andrews, and two sisters, Mary Alice Cushing Gilliland of Salters and Margie Lee Kircher of Columbia.
Surviving are a son, Charles Edward Cooper of Georgetown; two daughters, Jeanie C. Goodwin (Thomas) and Claire C. Floyd (Brian), both of Georgetown; a brother, D.E. "Dickie" Cooper (Judith) of Salters; and three grandchildren; Caitlyn Goodwin, Caroline Goodwin and Tristen Davis.

Layton E. Dawson
Layton Eugene "Gene" Dawson, 57, of Sarasota, Fla., formerly of Myrtle Beach, died Monday, June 30, 2008.
Memorial services will be Saturday, July 12, 2008, at 2 p.m. at Harvest United Methodist Church in Bradenton, Fla.
Mr. Dawson served in the U.S. Air Force from 1969 to 1973, serving in Vietnam, and then he was stationed in Taiwan. He was honorably discharged from the military as sergeant. He was past president of the local B.A.S.S. Masters. He worked at Laurel Oak Country Club for several years. He also was a member of Harvest United Methodist Church.
Surviving are his mother, Dorothy Coleman of Myrtle Beach; a son, Christian of Sarasota; a brother, Deacon Dawson of Surfside Beach; two half-sisters, Leah Vanoy of St. Albins, W.Va., and Karra Bieber of Culloden, W.Va.; and a stepsister, Lynn Sammons of Estero, Fla.

Annie Mae F. Grate
Annie Mae "Micie" Ford Grate, 74, of Pawleys Island, died Saturday, June 28, 2008, at her residence.
Funeral services will be Saturday, July 5, 2008, at 2 p.m. at St. John AME Church in Pawleys Island with the Rev. Abraham Nelson officiating.
Mrs. Grate was born Nov. 30, 1933, a daughter of the late John and Maggie Jane Blye. She received her education at Holy Cross Faith Memorial School and Howard High School in Georgetown County. She was a member of St. John AME Church, where she served in various capacities.
Surviving are a son, Christopher Grate of Pawleys Island; two daughters, Gail Sessions and Carolyn G. Myers, both of Pawleys Island; four brothers, Howard Blye Sr. of Piscataway, N.J., Herman Ford of Jamaica, N.Y., Ervin Ford of Brooklyn, N.Y., and Mikel Ford of Myrtle Beach; two sisters, Margaret Sindab and Carlethia Jenkins, both of Pawleys Island; eight grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.
Roy W. Hunter
Roy W. Hunter, 54, of Pine Bluff, Ark., died Tuesday, July 1, 2008, at Trinity Retirement Village in Pine Bluff.
Memorial services were Thursday, July 3, 2008, at 2 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church, 717 West 32nd Ave. in Pine Bluff, with the Rev. Jeff Price officiating. Ralph Robinson & Son Funeral Directors was in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Hunter was born Feb. 5, 1954, in Weddington, N.C., a son of the late V.F. Hunter and Martha Hunter. He enrolled in N.C. State Defense College in Aircraft Inspection in Raleigh, N.C., and graduated in 1942. He worked in Fairchild Aircraft in Hagerstown, Md., and Burlington, N.C., until joining the Navy in 1944. He served in the Asiatic/Pacific Arena until his discharge. He married his wife, Corrine Boyd, in 1949. Following his graduation, Mr. Hunter began a 35-year career with International Paper, working in South Carolina, Alabama and Arkansas. He continued to work as a consultant in the pulp and paper industry after his retirement in 1985.
His years of stewardship to future engineers was recognized by the establishment of the Roy W. Hunter Scholarship Endowment at the Pulp and Paper Foundation, N.C. State University in Raleigh.
He was predeceased by his father, V.S. Hunter; his mother, Martha; two brothers, Vic and Jim Hunter; and a sister, Betsy Hunter DeLaney.
Surviving are his wife; two daughters, Sharon Norton and Martha Hunter Guesman; a son, Roy "Hunt" Hunter Jr.; two grandsons, Hunter and Winfrey Norton; a granddaughter, Marissa Hunter; and a sister, Margaret Hunter Beadle.

Clifton W. Morris
Clifton Wayne Morris Sr., 63, of Andrews, died Wednesday, July 2, 2008, at Georgetown Memorial Hospital.
Funeral services will be Friday, July 4, 2008, at 11 a.m. at Sampit United Methodist Church with the Revs. Robert L. Eubanks and Franklin Lowrimore officiating. Burial will follow in Sampit United Methodist Cemetery.
Mr. Morris was born June 7, 1945, in Charleston, a son of the late Edgar Clifton Morris and Vivian Thompson Morris. He grew up in Georgetown and was a graduate of Andrews High School and received an associate's degree in criminal justice. Mr. Morris served as a police officer for a number of years. He was a former chief of police for the Town of Andrews and also an assistant chief of police for the City of Georgetown. He retired as an agent with Liberty Life Insurance Co. in 2006.
Mr. Morris was a member of Sampit United Methodist Church. He served his church as a lay speaker and music director and was a member of numerous committees and a member of the Administrative Board. He was a past President of the Georgetown Association of Insurance and Financial Advisors.
Surviving are his wife, Gloria Bonbicino Morris of Georgetown; a son, C. Wayne Morris Jr. (Nancy) of Georgetown; two daughters, Donna M. Terry and Melissa M. Goude (Chris), both of Georgetown; four brothers, Glen Morris and Don Morris, both of Georgetown, Dr. Richard Morris of Winter Park, Fla., and Randy Morris of Lexington; and three grandchildren, Amanda Terry, Ron Terry Jr. and Brice Morris, all of Georgetown.

Allen N. Simmons
Allen Nesbit Simmons, 84, of Surfside Beach, died Saturday, June 28, 2008.
Memorial services were Wednesday, July 2, 2008, at 2 p.m. at the Episcopal Church of the Resurrection in Surfside Beach. Goldfinch Funeral Home, Beach Chapel, was in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Simmons was born Sept. 21, 1924, in North Bennington, Vt., a son of the late Herman McLane "Jack" Simmons and Marcia Allen Simmons. He graduated from the University of Vermont with a Bachelor of Science degree in mechanical engineering. He served three years in the U.S. Army and was a veteran of World War II, serving with the Glider Troops in France, the Air Force Cadet Program. He attended Catawba College in Salisbury, N.C., and retired after 33 years with Union Carbide Corporation as an engineering manager.
Mr. Simmons was a member of the American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Masonic Lodge, Moose Club, and was a licensed professional engineer in Ohio and Tennessee. He was a nine-gallon blood donor and ran the Red Cross Program in Tennessee. He also was a licensed Episcopalian Lay Reader in Tennessee and West Virginia and led the start up of a new Episcopal Church in Lawrenceburg, Tenn. Mr. Simmons designed and built the first log cabin home in Surfside.
He was predeceased by his wife, Carolyn Anne Quance Simmons, and his fiancée of 11 years, Jean B. Alexander.
Surviving are two daughters, Nancy Anne Crossman (Daryl) of Sandwich Cape Cod, Mass., and Sally Anne Wilson (Randolph) of Myrtle Beach; a twin brother, Arthur C. Simmons (Therese); and three grandchildren, Nicholaus and Kyra Crossman, both of Sandwich Cape Cod, and Emily Anne Wilson of Myrtle Beach.
