Irene R. Alford

Irene Roberts Alford, 88, of Georgetown, the widow of Miley Preston Alford, died Saturday, May 3, 2008, at the Mullins Nursing Center.

Funeral services were held at 7 p.m. Monday, May 5, 2008 at the Ringle Heights Baptist Church. A reception followed after the service in the church fellowship hall. A Committal Ceremony was held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, May 6, 2008 in the Methodist Rehobeth Cemetery north of Aynor, directed by the Georgetown Chapel of McKenzie Funeral Home.

Mrs. Alford was born Nov. 9, 1919 in Gallivants Ferry, the daughter of Hannibal H. Roberts and Sally Stroud Roberts. She worked over the years in retail and on a farm. She was a member of the Ringle Heights Baptist Church for more than 40 years.

Mrs. Alford was predeceased by her parents; her husband; a sister, Inez Johnson; and a niece, Bonnie Mae Keyes.

Surviving are one son, Billy A. (Mickey) Alford of Rincon, Ga.; two daughters, Dixie A. Davis and Brenda J. Redick (James), both of Georgetown; one sister, Gertrude R. Alford of Mullins; a beloved nephew, J.B. Crawford of Conway; nine grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

Thomas C. Barnhill Jr.

Thomas Clarence Barnhill Jr., 68, of Loris died Sunday, May 4, 2008 at Loris Community Hospital.

Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Wednesday, May 7, 2008 at Live Oak Baptist Church, with burial following in Pleasant Union Cemetery. Pastor Steve Nobles and the Rev. Dock Rabon will officiate at the services. Visitation was held from 7 until 9 p.m. Tuesday, May 6, 2008 at Hardwick Funeral Home.

Mr. Barnhill was born Oct. 9, 1939 in Conway, a son of Thomas Clarence Barnhill Sr. and Mrs. Ninaree Hughes Barnhill. Mr. Barnhill was a sewing machine mechanic, a longtime member of the Live Oak Baptist Church, and an avid fisherman.

Survivors include his wife, Rosie Mincey Barnhill of Loris; two daughters, Debbie Lynn Page (Dale) of Bayboro, and Karen Gore (Josh) of Aynor; three brothers, John ''J.C.'' Barnhill of Georgetown, Donald Bruce Barnhill of Loris, and Samuel Robert Barnhill of Conway; one sister, Betty Jean Strickland of Conway; half-sister, Thelma Smith of Jacksonville, Fla.; six grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Mr. Barnhill was predeceased by his parents; and his brother, James Alex Barnhill.

William L. Brown

William ''Billy'' Lamar Brown, of Murrells Inlet, died Friday, May 2, 2008 at his residence.

A graveside service will be held at 3:15 p.m. Wednesday, May 7, 2008 in the Aynor Cemetery, with the Rev. Tony Brown and the Rev. Tray Brown officiating. The family will receive friends prior to the service, from 2 until 3 p.m., at Johnson Funeral Home of Aynor.

Joseph J. Chopko

Joseph John Chopko, 75, of Murrells Inlet, died Sunday, May 4, 2008 at National Healthcare of Garden City Beach.

Mr. Chopko was born in Brooklyn, N.Y. He was a U.S. Army veteran serving in the Korean War. Mr. Chopko was a retired banker, and was a member of St. Michael Catholic Church.

Surviving are his wife, Lillian Chopko; son, Joseph Chopko of Pa.; daughters, Susan Catalano and Lorraine Chopko Connolly, both of New York; and grandchildren, Misha, Joseph, Megan, Erin and Sebastian.

Patricia W. Eargle

Patricia Ann Wilson Eargle, 73, of Pawleys Island, died Sunday, May 4, 2008 at her home.

Services will be held 2 p.m. Thursday, May 8, 2008 at Goldfinch Funeral Home, Litchfield-Pawleys Chapel, with Pastor Harold Lewis officiating. The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 p.m. Wednesday, May 7, 2008 at the funeral home.

Born in Conway, she was the daughter of the late John H. and Lelia Wilson. Mrs. Eargle was a homemaker. Two brothers and four sisters preceded her in death.

Surviving are her husband, Don L. Eargle; daughters, Cindy Ross (Doug) of Alpharetta, Ga., and Patricia Brok (Martin) of Portland, Ore.; sister, Nancy Hendrick of Conway; and grandchildren, Matthew Ross, Ian Brok, Jonathan Ross, Caroline Brok and Lauren Brok.

David Heckman

David Heckman, 53, of Surfside Beach, owner of Charleston Cafe, died Sunday.

Funeral arrangements will be announced by Goldfinch Funeral Home, Beach Chapel.

Mildred Lambert

Mildred C. Lambert, 86, of Georgetown, widow of Luther L. Lambert, Sr., died Monday, May 5, 2008 at Georgetown Memorial Hospital.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, May 7, 2008 at Saints Delight Pentecostal Holiness Church. Officiating will be Rev. Chris Browder and Rev. Gene Lisenby. Burial, directed by Graham Funeral Home, will follow in Luther L. Lambert Cemetery.

Mrs. Lambert was born March 18, 1922 in Georgetown County, a daughter of the late Daniel Ralston Cooper and the late Iceleen Bednego Cooper.

Mrs. Lambert was a retired quality control manager with the former Oneita Knitting Mills and later worked with Creative Apparel of Andrews. She was a member of Saints Delight Pentecostal Holiness Church where she was an Adult Sunday School Teacher for more than 50 years, a past president of Women's Ministry, a Missions Minister, a past music director, and treasurer. Part of her ministry was her Sentence Ministry Sermons on Sunday nights. She sang regularly at the Gospel Filling Station on Friday nights; her signature song was "I'm on My Way to Heaven."

Surviving are: two sons, Dennis E. Lambert (Kay) of Jamestown, and Larry L. Lambert Jr. (Connie) of Andrews; one daughter, Della Anne Lambert Jones of Moncks Corner; 10 grandchildren, Dennis Lambert Jr., Rhonda Caddell, Cass Manley, Kay Lambert, Michelle McKenzie, Luther L. Lambert III, Jeremy Jones, Rebecca Jones and Allison Jones, Kenneth Brinson; 12 great-grandchildren, Forrest Lambert, Colleen Lambert, Pamela Lambert, Daniel Felkel, Haylee Caddell, Rachel Hemingway, Danielle Manley, Casey Geiger, Alexander McKenzie, Hunter Lambert, Joshua Lambert and Brianna Lambert; three brothers, Rev. Daniel Cooper of Walterboro, David Cooper of Jamestown, and Sam Cooper of St. Stephens; four sisters, Clara Mae Cooper of Georgetown, Mary Ann Ackerman of Andrews, Doris Gause of Andrews, and Bell Lee of Georgetown; and a number of nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by a son, Kenneth Luther Lambert; a daughter, Angela Brinson; a granddaughter, Yvonne Lambert, two sisters, Lula Ward and Sadie Evans; and three brothers, Ezra Cooper, Junior Cooper and James E. Cooper.

Paul L. Sloan

Paul L. Sloan, 49, of Murrells Inlet, died Saturday, May 3, 2008 in Hemingway.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, May 8, 2008 in Belin United Methodist Church, Murrells Inlet, with the Rev. Mike Alexander and Dr. John Gambrel officiating. Mr. Sloan was born July 17, 1958 in Marion, a son of the late David and Jean Foxworth Sloan. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his brother, Mark Sloan.

He was a real estate broker and president of Sloan Realty and Management.

Survivors include his wife, Janet Sloan, and two sons, Jacob and Conor Sloan, all of Murrells Inlet; two brothers, John Sloan (Lori) of Surfside Beach and Hugh Sloan of Murrells Inlet; and several nieces and nephews.

Loise Z. Sullivan

Loise Angela Mary Zanzucchi Sullivan, 76, of Surfside Beach, died Friday, April 25, 2008.

Mrs. Sullivan was the wife of Eugene Joseph Sullivan. The couple retired to Surfside Beach from Silver Spring, Md., in 2001. A native of Syracuse, N.Y., she was the daughter of Joseph and Jennie Zanzucchi, who preceded her in retiring to Surfside Beach.

She pursued a career in clinical social work. She was assistant director of the House of Mercy, a home for unwed mothers in Washington, D.C. There she founded the Rosemount Center, a pioneering bilingual day care center, and served as its executive director from the early 1970s to the mid 1980s.

She was valedictorian of her high school class. She received her Bachelor of Arts degree with honors from Lemoyne College in Syracuse, N.Y. She obtained a master's degree in social work from Boston College in Boston, and a second master's degree in early childhood education from Antioch College.

She was a lifelong political activist and community volunteer on issues of poverty and the needs of women and children. She was active in day care advocacy and helping the homeless. She helped plan and establish Progress Place, a self-help center for the homeless in the Washington, D.C. area. She received the Montgomery County Maryland Volunteer of the Year award in 2001. She was active with the Montgomery County Coalition for the Homeless, Shepard's Table, the Silver Spring, Md. Garden Club, 50's Plus in Surfside Beach, and Health 2 You in Myrtle Beach. She was a member of St. Michael Catholic Church in Garden City.

Mrs. Sullivan was married to Eugene J. Sullivan, an educator with the American Council on Education. They met at Boston College. In 2007, they celebrated 50 years of marriage with a trip to Northern Italy.

She is survived by her husband, as well as their four children, John J. Sullivan, Esq. (Julie) of Saratoga Springs, N.Y., Gregory B. Sullivan, M.D. (Rowena) of York, Pa., Andrea Loise Turner (Robert) of Pope's Creek, Md., and Eugene Jeffrey Sullivan, M.D. (Patricia) of Olney, Md.; and 11 grandchildren, Benjamin, Gabriel, Theo, Miranda, Hannah, Maggie, Katie, Addy, Aidan, Darby, and Mae.
