RE: Letter regarding gun control
In [a recent] edition, writer Elizabeth railed (Yourdictionary.com: “to speak or act bitterly or hatefully”) against “Gun Lovers” in a letter titled “Recent letters on gun control” with terms such as “gun lovers are embarrassing…”, “their raving is… obnoxious...”, “…violent minded people …with a poisonous vision…”, and “…stupidly easy access…”.
This name calling is a tacit concession by the writer that she cannot prevail on the merits; and she can’t, so the name-calling goes on as does the use of other people’s tragedy to support ideologically-driven political agendas.
Although guns have been around for centuries, we now live in a nanny state where the government is supposed to provide all of our needs including protecting us and our families from harm. It can’t and it won’t, so we must be able to protect ourselves.
Apparently only handguns were used in the Sandy Hook tragedy (reports are still confusing) but Elizabeth would lead you to believe that you must act because “assault-ready” weapons were used. And there lies (just) one of the issues with the gun control arguments; they are built on false information being passed on as truth which takes on a life of its own. Mark Twain said “a lie can travel half way around the world while the truth is putting its boots on.”
Our families, our constitution, and ultimately our liberty are being threatened by false information, lies, and name calling.
The following words are just as appropriate today as when they were first written over 200 years ago: “Eternal vigilance is the price of liberty.” Be vigilant my friends when name calling and false information are used to restrict your liberty.

Justice?
Just read the latest edition (Thursday, January 31, 2013) of the Waccamaw Times.
Why is the Justice Department so concerned with the racial makeup of the Charter school? I thought we lived in a color blind society and a person should be judged by the content of their character, and not by the color of their skin. Merely empty words? Perhaps the “Justice” Department should change their name to the Racial Quota Department.
Oh, and the reason why Mojo “couldn’t quite get the points Mr. Jeffries was trying to make” in his letter, is because Mojo is a dog.

Reading and learning
During the month of December the three Grand Strand Books A Million stores conducted a book and toy drive benefiting Miss Ruby’s Kids, a Georgetown County organization that helps parents prepare their children for school success and supports the children and their families once they enter school.
Customers at the stores were given the opportunity at check-out to purchase a book or toy to donate to Miss Ruby’s Kids. The response was tremendous.
We would like to thank the citizens of Georgetown and Horry counties and the three Books A Million stores for their generosity during the holiday season. Because of their generosity, many children will enjoy reading and learning throughout the year with the books and toys that were donated.
