Hold tight

Taxpayers of South Carolina, hold onto your wallets. Lawyers of South Carolina, get ready to make a lot more money. Yes, the Republicans are trying to spend money to make a point that they lost. The only ones to lose by their action are going to be the taxpayers.

Some Representatives in Columbia have entered a bill they hope to pass. These Republicans are William Chumley, Bill Taylor, Gerry R. Smith, Chip Huggins, and Don L. Wells. The bill they introduced would make it a crime if any federal government employee attempts to implement the health care bill. Those individuals that do could be fined up to $5,000 and or 5 years in prison. If any state employee or official attempts to implement the law they can be fined up to $1,000 and or up to 2 years in prison.

The reason they give for this new law is because they say the Heath Care Act is unconstitutional. I do not know where they have been, but the Supreme Court ruled the law is constitutional. Is it the Republican belief that they can pick and choose what decisions they will follow and what decisions they won’t?

So far, our only costs have been the cost of getting the bill submitted. However, any taxpayer monies and time spent considering this bill is a waste. We have a lot more pressing problems in South Carolina than trying to overthrow a Supreme Court decision with a law. The only thing this bill would accomplish is taxpayers monies will be wasted and South Carolina lawyers will be sending the taxpayers big bills.

In our system of government, the Supreme Court has the final word on constitutionality, not the South Carolina Legislature.
