Unfair tactics
As I write this it is Election Day morning and obviously at this point no one knows what the results of the vote will be. I am commenting about the Pennies For Progress tactics being used at the last minute to promote the 1% county sales tax.
They are broadcasting last-minute ads on the radio and have last-minute mail-outs that cannot be answered before the polls open, and they simply do not contain the truth.
This is not a fair tax and this is not a bipartisan issue.
The definition of a fair tax includes reimbursing the poor for the extra tax that they pay. This is certainly not the case with the new sales tax. Second and the biggest untruth is that “this is a bi-partisan issue.” The fact that a very few left-leaning Republicans support the tax does not overshadow the fact that the Georgetown County Republican Party voted almost unanimously against the sales tax and passed a resolution that was printed in this paper to that effect. This is not a fair tax.
The folks who are responsible for the deceptive ads may live to regret soiling their reputations like this. If the tax issue fails, any further attempt to promote another tax in the future, which may be a good thing at that time, will be wearing this as a black eye. If you can’t be trusted to give the voters the facts without exaggeration and loose use of the truth now, when will they be able to believe you?
If the tax passes, you have successfully galvanized forces against any further like issues.
Stick with the truth folks. You will feel better about yourself regardless of the outcome.
