Lady Bears fall in playoff opener

Carvers Bay's volleyball team was knocked out of the Class A playoffs by Charleston Math and Science on last week.
"We struggled with being consistent with our serves when usually my girls are known for great serving," said Bears coach Kimberly Baker. "We just couldn't get it together. Tough loss."
It was a disappointing end to a season that included 11 wins and a Region VII championship.
"We played hard and we fought hard," said senior Savannah Powers. "I'm proud we won region."
After the Riptide won game one 25-15, the Bears took an early lead in game two and held off rallies until the Riptide tied the game at 19-19. The teams traded points to 22-22, and then Erin Owens served the Bears to a 25-22 victory.
Charleston came out strong in game three, building a 6-3 lead and extending it to 9-7 before Carvers Bay rallied to go ahead 12-9. Charleston then came back to tie the score at 13-13, and the Riptide held off the Bears down the stretch for the 25-20 victory.
Carvers Bay had an early 5-4 lead in game four but Charleston came back to take a 9-7 lead.
The Bears scored the next four points to lead 11-9, but couldn't shake the Riptide, who eventually tied the game at 15-15.
Carvers Bay took its last lead of the game at 16-15, but after Charleston regained the lead at 17-16, the Bears couldn't get any closer than two points down.
Chelsey Jones led the Bears in serving and Savanna Powers and Jasmine Eaddy led in hits.
"I'm proud of them," Baker said. "I had five seniors and I knew that we were going to have a good chance. We were expecting to go a little farther in playoffs, but that's just how it happens sometimes."
