Kwame Geathers, a 2009 graduate of Carvers Bay High School, said Wednesday he has decided to forego his senior season at the University of Georgia and enter the 2013 NFL draft.
“I’m going to go ahead and leave,” Geathers told Dawgs247. “I felt like I was ready to go. I think I did everything at Georgia that I wanted to do. I felt like it was time to get a jump on the next step in my career.”
Geathers told the website he received a grade of “third-to-sixth round” from the NFL’s draft advisory board and is “very excited” to take on his pro career.
He plans to pick an agent and a destination to begin training for the draft.
The 6-foot-6, 355-pound Geathers played in 34 games for the Bulldogs after redshirting during the 2009 season. This season, he had 40 tackles, including five for loss.
During his Carvers Bay career, Geathers had 14 sacks and more than 200 tackles. He helped propel the Bears to back-to-back Class A Division I state runner-up finishes in 2007 and 2008.
Geathers joins a lengthy Geathers family history of players leaving early to turn professional. His older brother Robert Geathers Jr. played for Georgia from 2001-03 and is a member of the NFL’s Cincinnati Bengals. His other brother, Clifton, left South Carolina early and is a member of the Indianapolis Colts.
Geathers’ father and uncle also played in the NFL.
Robert Geathers Sr. was a defensive tackle for the Buffalo Bills. Jumpy Geathers was a pass-rushing specialist during a 13-year NFL career.
