Hibbett Sports received an unwanted welcome to Georgetown over the weekend.
The store opened its doors in the Georgetown Plaza on North Fraser Street Saturday.
That night the store was burglarized and the suspect apparently barely escaped.
According to the Georgetown Police Department, officers responded to an alarm at the store at about 2:30 a.m. Sunday.
When police arrived they discovered the front door was unlocked so they walked inside. They saw pieces of cinder block on the floor and several missing ceiling tiles.
Based on that it was believed someone may have been hiding in the ceiling. Police requested the Georgetown City Fire Department to send the ladder truck so it could be used to get officers on the roof.
An officer climbed through the ceiling but no one was found.
The other stores in the plaza were checked and it was discovered New Esquire Fashions and Goody’s had also been burglarized.
When the various businesses were later checked a lobby door was open and lights were on inside Georgetown Dental Center, which had not been the case when the building was originally checked. This caused officers to believe someone was in that business after police arrived.
Nothing was reported missing from the stores. The suspect has not been found.
