Girl archer gets 11-point buck

Brittany Michau got an 11-point buck recently with a bow and arrow on an archery hunt at the Buck and Boar Lodge at Swansea. That's about 20 miles from Columbia.

She got this big game a couple of months after the 14-year-old from Georgetown killed a Texas Dall Sheep ram at the same hunting preserve.

Grandpa Willard Michau said she's going up to Massachusetts or somewhere in New England soon to meet with Matt Hughes.

He's a 9-time UFC (Ultra Fighting Championship) mixed martial arts fighter. He was at Buck and Boar when Brittany got the ram that was pictured in the Georgetown Times in late August.

"They're going to have a birthday party for her," he said. She'll be 15 years old.

Hughes partners with Buck and Boar to promote hunting.

That's something Brittany wants to do, too.

"She's working to build a women's TV show," her dad Joey Michau said, with a focus on bow hunting.

The picture above shows that Brittany is a successful hunter. The 11-point buck weighed 258 pounds. She got the buck on a hunt about three weeks ago.

Willard Michau said his granddaughter killed a buffalo at Stone Ranch, which has about 2,000 acres for hunting. And, he added, she will be going bear hunting in the near future.

"Her momma doesn't hunt. She just isn't into it."

But, he added, Brittany really enjoys hunting.

"I'm glad my grandbaby is interested. She loves to hunt."

Earlier in deer season she got a 6-point buck with velvet horns. "She's used a bow for 2 1/2 to 3 years," he said.

The Texas Dall Sheep she killed in August was taken with a .270 rifle she got while on a hunting trip to Illinois.

Her goal for the cable TV show she'd like to develop would be to show women about hunting and share with the audience the enjoyment she gets from hunting and being outdoors.

It;s not about the child. I never mentioned her. It's about the issue at hand - controlled hunting vs. real hunting.

Thank God this seems to be winding down!!Thanks to Jamie, we now know that pens are not the open wilderness!! What a revelation!!! If you fence Wyoming,is that a "pen"? What size in square miles is this place in question? Lets have some facts about this,so people don't get a distorted idea what this place is like. Brittany has taken a lot more heat about this then most adults twice her age, without retaliation, which shows more maturity than those who continue to even criticize her parents for the way she was raised! How sad! This young girl has shown class beyond her years, and her parents can be proud!!

Pens do not equal the open wilderness.

Jamie, stick with union politics and whatever,, those "pens" are bigger than some hunting clubs! If it makes you feel better, have a veal sandwich!

"A litle research on the Buck & Boar reveals that it is pen where they raise various animals for people to shoot. If this girls parents think that is any way to teach a child to be a sport they are sadly mistaken. No sportsman that I know even watch the shows that feature hunts in pens. Although I'm not a hunting fan myself,I'm just glad she has goals and dreams for herself. There are much worse things she could be doing at her age.And whether me or the next person likes it or understands it, its who she is and we shouldn't want to crush her spirit for it.She's done it her whole life. She truly has a passion for it and she's good at it. Her experience is not limited to what is considered "pen hunting" nor deer hunting, or even bow hunting. But not only is she a great hunter, she is a very smart&talented girl and has much to be proud of.So hold your head up girl and don't let no one take that away from you!You just keep being you, you'll never please everybody.

Regarding the last post, with hunting pens of 1300 and 2000 acres can hardly be called "pen hunting"! Most local hunting clubs are not that big in size,so having stated that fact, again, all i can say is "Way to go Brittany"!! Great Deer!

: 10/30/2009
Great deer -- you go girl! Texas Whitetail Deer Breeder and Hunter P.S.-- our hunting pens are 1,300 acres and 2,000 acres.

facts : 10/30/2009
Some of you tree huggers should get your facts straight before posting. As we develope land and destroy habitat population must be controlled through hunting.Maybe you have forgotten the issues briarcliff acres has with deer.Maybe you don't notice the number dead on the side of the highway or how those accidents cost not only higher insurance but injury and death to humans.Maybe you would rather the deer starve because there is more of them than the food can sustain. Wildlife biologists study the population(experts) and determine what needs to be harvested. The whitetail population is higher now than when settlers first came here and with less habitat. Most deer are eaten and programs collect what hunters don't want to feed the homeless. If you want to complain, go complain to the developers who are destroying nature and killing ten times the animals and not eating one by destroying habitat. hunting organizations like ducks unlimited preserve millions of acres of habitat with hunters money. By charging money for great hunting areas nature and more animals survive than if there were condos. Succesful hunts get wealthy hunters to pay that money. Not only are deer beautiful, they are delicious!

There is no sport in killing captive animals.

In reply to :Listen to what you people call "sport". I do not think of hunting as a sport..to some it is..but to me it is a necessity. My family harvests 3 or 4 deer a year..more if we are lucky enough to find them...off our property and I can guarantee everyone makes it onto my table. Without the deer to fill our freezer there would be many of nights that we just did not eat throughout the year. And I know for many others it is the same way..so NO hunting should not be made illegal. Now the dog hunting ..yes I agree that should go. The dogs are not well cared for and alot of the club members do not recognize or respect the property lines or private property signs..they are always running dogs through my property and not collecting them at the end of the day alot of times. If they want to hunt they should do it the proper way like we do and make a deer habitat. I personally have planted oaks, apples, persimmons, clover, and other things that benefit the deer as well as other animals and while yes I do have stands to hunt in on my property that does not mean a deer will go to that area I am sitting in at the time I am in it..it is still hit or miss.

: 10/29/2009
Cut the little girl some slack..she is a child. and while I do not agree with "pen hunting" someone ought to mention that these "pens" on the hunting ranches are not like your normal back yard or horse pen. They more often then not are 100s or 1000s of acres that are fenced...she'd still have to find the animal and stalk it to get one.

: 10/29/2009
I saw a place on the internet in Arizona where you can sit in your office and over the internet shoot a remote controlled rifle at your deer or moose or whatever and they will ship you the mount. These animals are dying for a photo op. Not for food or survival or sport or any of that. For a photograph.

: 10/29/2009
Listen to what you people call "sport". Killing a defenseless animal for your personal enjoyment is not sport. No wonder Ip and Westvaco are making less land available for this nonsense. And don't give me the lines about eating these poor animals. I'll bet the percentages of deer that actually make it to a meal are microscopic. It should all be made illegal.

: 10/29/2009
ain't it sas what some people call sport. Where do YOU draw the line? Did they lead the deer by on a leash? Would that be sport? You gotta draw the line somewhere or we loose our sport to the people who want us to stop hunting all together. This picture should not have been made available to the paper.YOu are right, keep this kind of junk at home out of the paper.Always remember that when you see a freak like this that it is not the same kind of feeling as if yu really hunted it, even if yours is smaller. Who would be jealous? There are a lot of people who could afford $7000. Most of us spend that much or more on hunting in the run of a year anyway.

: 10/29/2009
The last comment: Jealous about what? Anyone can do that in a pen. I hope she discovers the real sport before she becomes disenchanted.

: 10/29/2009
If someone is against killing animals for"sport" how could they be jealous? That logic doesn't make sense.

: 10/28/2009
Good Job Girl! Dont pay any attention to the negative comments, these are the same people who look down their noses and think they are better than you. Small mindedness is the pen they stay in. As another poster said it jealousy pure and simple.

: 10/28/2009

Hunting is for sissies and people with issues with their masculinity.

Jealousy : 10/28/2009
Jealousy is a green-eyed monster that will eat your insides out. All these negative comments and not one word of retaliation. Just like I said earlier; manners. Thanks for the call,Brittany, but you know you don't owe me any thanks. Just standing up for the sport we all love so much. You handle criticism better than most adults. Yall give us a call when you want to try some more of those tree rats. LOL.

: 10/28/2009
Hunt? Yes! Most people, and i'll bet you included, could not hit a deer with a bow if it were standing in your kitchen!!

: 10/27/2009
Hunt? You must mean target practice. I haven't read anyone putting down the girl only the practice of killing in a pen (not hunting) which her parents are responsable for. Pen killing cheapens the real sport.

WAY TO GO BRITTNEY!!!!!!!! : 10/27/2009
Congats on the monster buck!!!!!!! I have hunted all my life and never killed one that big! Don't let the bad comments get you down because they are just jealous they can't do it like you! WACK AND STACK!!

jealousy is very painful thing. I am jealous of her myself, But I do not put my stepsister down for be a better hunter than me. so for all you grow men who have somthing to say get over it. Grow up and stop putting 14 year old girls down.

You must think that those chops, steaks and chicken fingers you munch on grows on bushes! Ever been to a stock yard, or chicken processor? Don't limit beauty to just wild animals!!As for sane?Hmmmm! Your Veal sandwich is ready!

: 10/27/2009
The other 98% of us are sane. Why would anyone want to kill a beautiful wild animal ,just for the fun of it. It's sick and disgusting. Blame the parents as they turned her on to it.

: 10/26/2009
How sad when people have to attack a 14 year old girl for accomplishing what 98% of you can't! Does it have to bother you people so much to see this kid happy??

: 10/26/2009
This is what pen hunting brings out. If you do it, keep it quiet and don't put it in tha paper. It really is not something to brag about. According to the web site that deer cost somebody about $7000.(seven thousand). I would just as soon buy a good sofa as have a comercial buck on my wall. And she killed a Buffalo and a goat? Should have saved that money for college. You can go on line and buy a huge set of plastic antlers for $200. and have it mounted on a local deer for $400 and save $6000. No difference to me. Neither one is "real".

: 10/25/2009
I know hunters who have killed upwards of 25 to 30 deer in a season, ahead of dogs and buckshot!! And to make this more difficult, run from crossing to crossing in pick-up trucks. It seems that if someone including a 14 year old hunter, who does something different than you do is condemmed for it. Why not explain to us how you hunt, if in fact you do!!

: 10/25/2009
to answer you all---1) "hunting" has nothing to do with shooting an animal in a pen and should not be refered to as such.It is target practice pure and simple. 2)You can not bait in the upstate but they kill more deer per hunt (avg) than we do. It isn't a sure thing.3)I predict that this girl will quickly grow tired of hunting when she realizes that in the wild she can't find the same animals. It is a shame that she has been introduced to this. Put a child on a ball team, give them 5 goals to start with and see how long they enjoy the game. 3) If you think hunting deer with dogs is easy and that the deer does not have the advantage then you don't have a clue what you are talking about.$0 pen hunting is just the fuel that the antihunters need to kill our sport. 5)Don't say that all hunters should stick together and include pen killing with real hunting. That is an insult to real hunters.

: 10/25/2009
That is why i commented on her buck! i've hunted all my life, and if anyone thinks is easy to take a deer with a bow, they are sadly mistaken! I've tried, and saw my own shortcomings real quick! So, again Brittany, Way to go!!

Sportsmanship : 10/25/2009
In this day and time, no true sportsman would condemn the hunting practices of another. Our rights to hunt are on the chopping block each and every day. Now back to Miss Brittany. Here is a young lady whose passion for hunting rivals her passion for life. Before you come on here and condemn her or her parents, stop by and sit down with her for a talk on hunting. This young lady has more sportsmanship in her pinky than most adults have in their body. She is dedicated to her sport and it shows in her proficiency with her weapon of choice. (get you a bow and try a little target practice with her) Though I have only been on one hunt with her, it didn't take long to realize the sportsmanship and manners she possesses. Her uncle and I were squirrel hunting with my dog one day, when we bumped into her father, her, and i believe her step-sister. They weren't having any luck, so we invited them to follow the dog for a while. These two young ladies hunted the remainder of the day taking turns on each tree the dog made. They only called it quits when the score was tied and cogratulated each other on the shots each made. No argueing about whose time it was to shoot or complaining when one was ahead of the other on the count. To say I was impressed would be an understatement. And for you young men out there wanting to challenge these two, take it from me, they can shoot.

: 10/25/2009
You mean the ethical practice of running them with dogs untill they drop? Or maybe baiting them to a cornpile only to be shot while they feed. Please clarify!
