Georgetown ties Myrtle Beach, loses in overtime

People who came out to the Georgetown Bulldogs gym Tuesday had a special treat as the boys' varsity basketball team forced powerhouse Myrtle Beach into overtime.
When the buzzer sounded at the end of regulation play, the small crowd had already witnessed quite a battle between the underdog Georgetown team and their neighbors to the north in Myrtle Beach.
High hopes for an upset win were dashed in overtime, but coach Alvin "Stitch" Walker credited his guys with a great game.
The Seahawks led most of the game, but Georgetown pulled ahead 35-33 with 4:24 left in the game.
Over the next 4:14 seconds of play, Georgetown held on tight. With 10 seconds remaining, Georgetown fouled. Myrtle Beach took the first of two shots which went through the net, but the shooter stepped forward and the ref called the shot no good.
The second shot was no good, and the score was tied at 39-39.
After a short break, Myrtle Beach made a fantastic 3-pointer. Georgetown went on to score 5 points but the Seahawks bested that effort with 11 points in overtime.
A disappointed pack of Bulldogs lost, 50-44.
Tough opponent
"Myrtle Beach is the number 2 team in the region," coach Walker said after the game.
"We had a good game plan. We played hard and we had our chances."
Everett Golson is quarterback for Myrtle Beach and plays basketball. He had a game-high 24 points, and Walker said he's one of the best in the state. "He's a good point guard."
After several away games, "It felt good to be back home," Walker said.
'Going through adversity'
"All season long, we've been going through adversity."
Sam Kelly had an appendectomy on Monday, so he's out.
In early January Avery Evans took a bad fall at a game at Andrews and was out until last Friday, Jan 22.
Another player had to leave the team for family reasons.
And then on Tuesday, Brian Keith was taken to the emergency room at Georgetown Memorial Hospital at the end of the third quarter. Later that night Walker learned Keith broke his wrist and will be out the rest of the season.
Scorers
Despite his broken wrist, Brian Keith still managed to score 10 points in the game before the injury.
Avery Evans had a team-high 14 points; Jervay Muhammad 2; Terry Johnson 4; Marcus Archie 8; Ben Grant 12; Jadia Johnson 2; and A.J. Walker 2.
Myrtle Beach's Golson had a game-high 24 points; Steven Cobb 13; Raheem Page 2; and Dallas Goodman 11.
The Bulldogs travel to Socastee on Friday.
"We have two big ones next week at home," Walker said, "St. James and North Myrtle Beach."
