Andrews juniors edge Georgetown
When baseball teams from Georgetown and Andrews meet, chances are fans will be treated to a compelling game.
Monday night's junior American Legion contest between Andrews Post 69 and Georgetown Post 114 was no exception.
The contest went back and forth for a full seven innings before Andrews was able to pull out the win in an extra frame. Reed Rimmer scored following a passed ball in the bottom of the eighth to give Post 69 an 8-7 win and improve its overall record to 8-5.
"We have a group of kids who have made a commitment to playing this summer," Andrews coach Roland Clemons said. "That's what it takes to play as many games as we have in as short amount of time as we have (during the junior legion schedule).
"We're having fun and we're enjoying the game. We're finding ways to win."
Rimmer reached base in the eighth after being hit by a pitch. He moved to second on a sacrifice by Justin Powell and advanced to third on Morgan Britt's groundout.
"Justin and Morgan did a great job of getting Reed to third," Clemons said. "We needed that kind of execution in that situation. When you get a runner in scoring position in game like this, anything can happen."
Rimmer led Andrews with two hits and drove in one. Powell finished with one hit and had two RBIs. Dusty Cumbie was the winning pitcher.
Rodney Beach paced Georgetown (6-6), finishing with two hits and two RBIs and Austin Gray also had two hits and drove in one.
"Andrews and Georgetown is always a big rivalry," Post 114 coach Mike Johnson said. "The norm is for us to play an exciting game. Many games have been decided by one run or in extra innings. It's not often that you will see otherwise."
Much of the scoring came in the first three frames as Andrews held a 7-6 advantage headed into the fourth inning.
Post 114 trailed 4-3 after two innings, but moved in front by scoring three runs in the third. Casey Newton drew a bases-loaded walk to even the game and RBI's from Beach and Gray made it 6-4.
Andrews rallied in its half of the third, tying the game following a Georgetown error and moving in front 7-6 on Rimmer's RBI triple.
Georgetown evened things back up in the seventh with Trey Bonds and Spencer Morgan singling to put two runners on and Beach delivering an RBI single that plated Bonds with the game-tying run.
