Crash kills local high school student

A Georgetown High School student was killed in a traffic accident Saturday morning..

Dillon Michael Cook, 16, of Calhoun Street in Kensington died in the accident, said, Deputy Coroner John Smith.

The one-vehicle accident happened at 5:41 a.m. on the gravel portion of Brick Chimney Road, according to the Highway Patrol.

Cook was a passenger in the vehicle and was not wearing a seat belt.

The driver, 18-year-old Jeremy Howdyshell of Georgetown, survived and is not hospitalized, Highway Patrol spokesman Bob Beres said, adding the driver was wearing a seat belt.

Beres said Howdyshell was driving a 1999 Honda SUV south on Brick Chimney Road when he fell asleep.

The vehicle ran off the road.

The crash is still being investigated.
