Georgetown resident Brendon Barber was recently named the new national board chairman for Associated Marine Institutes, Inc. (AMI).
Barber, whose term will last for two years, will lead the more than 800 volunteers of AMI to help them engage their local communities in the AMI mission to help troubled youth develop into responsible and productive citizens, said spokeswoman Michele Money-Carson
"I am honored to be adding my name to a long list of distinguished leaders who have served as national board chairman of AMI," said Barber. "I look forward to serving in this role during a critical time in the juvenile justice community. "
Barber is currently Mayor Pro Tem for the City of Georgetown and serves as coordinator for Safe and Drug Free Schools for the Georgetown County School District.
Barber has been involved with Georgetown Marine Institute (GMI) and AMI for the past 17 years.
"He was instrumental in reorganizing the local AMI state boards to impact resource development and educating policy makers in South Carolina," Money-Carson said. "He has assisted in helping GMI host a very successful annual golf tournament that has raised large revenues for the rebuilding and relocation of GMI."
O.B. Stander, president and CEO of AMI, said Barber's "dedication to helping troubled kids is unmatched and will serve him well as the new board chair."
Associated Marine Institutes, Inc. (AMI), is a non-profit organization dedicated to helping troubled youth develop into responsible and productive citizens.
The mission is to protect the public safety and positively impact as many youth as possible through the efforts of a diverse and innovative staff.

I had the pleasure of teaching Brendon Barber Algebra wnen I was a young teacher at Howard High School in the sixties. Good parenting and a solid charactor enabled this outstanding young man to develop into the caring and giving individual that he is today. My hat is off to you Brendon. I am proud of you. Joe Bryant
