Dr. Philip Wesley Comfort, a nationally recognized bible scholar and editor for Tyndale House Publishing teaches the second-semester New Testament class to juniors and seniors.
Historically, Dr. Comfort has taught courses about the Bible at colleges including Coastal Carolina, Columbia International University and Wheaton College. In addition to teaching, he has written and has published more than 20 articles in his field.
In addition to his biblical studies, Dr. Comfort is a published poet. His works include "Spirit Journey," a collection of biographical poems and "Oceanic," a book of poems inspired by the ocean and coast.
Recently, Comfort held a poetry reading in celebration of April's "Poetry Month" at the school with more than 50 students and faculty attending. "Not surprisingly," Comfort noted, "the ocean themed poems were the favorites of most students."
Head of School Martha Lord reports that "As part of our Judeo-Christian based mission, Dr. Comfort provides our students expert understanding of the New Testament and a solid grounding in its historical context."
Comfort says he "really enjoys the brilliant and inquisitive minds of 17- and 18-year-old students. They are open to new ideas and have a fresh understanding of the Bible."
In addition to the New Testament Course, each Friday morning the middle and upper school students attend a chapel program which is open to the public.
Comfort states, "While this is my first year teaching, I have been a regular on Lowcountry's campus for over five years. I was introduced to the school through my love of soccer and participation in the regular Monday and Friday afternoon community "pick-up" games led by Gary Gates, head of Upper School. It is such a pleasure to play on the Marlin's first-class soccer field."
