FUNERAL SERVICES

Joan K. Beall

Joan Marie Kirby Beall, 61, a retired grocery manager passed away in Tallahassee, Florida, July 29, 2010.

Visitation is planned for Sunday, August 8, from 2 - 4 p.m. at 311 Cleland Street, Georgetown South Carolina and a Sunset Service is at the South end of Pawleys Island at 7 p.m.

Mrs. Beall was a native of Georgetown, South Carolina and lived in Monticello, Florida for the past 14 years. She was a member of Sampit United Methodist Church.

Mrs. Beall is survived by her husband, James David Beall; one son, James Kevin Thomas (Katy) and one daughter, Rhonda Melissa Thomas all of Georgetown, South Carolina; one brother, Johnny Kirby (Regina) of Atlanta, Georgia; one sister, Janelle Kirby Yown (Tommy) of Tallahassee, Florida; three grandchildren, James Kristopher Thomas, Kaleb Richard Thomas and Rachel Morgan Miller.

She was preceded in death by parents William Jennings Bryant Kirby and Lanelle Jacobs Kirby.

George C. Hugie

George C. "Chocolate" Hugie, of North Charleston, South Carolina died Wednesday, August 4, 2010 in North Charleston, SC.

Funeral services for Mr. Hugie will be held 1 p.m., on Saturday, August 7, 2010 at St. Peters AME Church, 4650 Sanders Ave., North Charleston, SC. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

Mr. Hugie was born May 23, 1913 in the Maxwell Community of Georgetown County, South Carolina to Ceasar and Leilla Hugie. Mr. Hugie was the widower of Mrs. Rubie McBride Hugie.

He attended Georgetown County public schools and was a member of St. Peters AME Church. He was also a US Army Veteran and worked as a Funeral Director at North Area Funeral Home, North Charleston, SC.

He is survived by his children: Bishop George H. Hugie & LaTricia Hugie Halls of Mt. Pleasant, SC, Ms. Emma Jean Joy, Arthur V. Nesbit, Cythia A. Mitchell, Blanch Hugie Perry all of North Charleston, SC; a brother & sister-in-laws: John & Leona McBride of Baltimore, MD; Relatives in the area: great-grandchildren: Sean Singleton and Rosalyn Murray; niece, Virgie Tennison.

A wake will be held from 6-8 p.m. on Friday, August 6, 2010 at St. Peters AME Church.

Heather L. Johnson

Heather Lorraine Johnson, 34, of Georgetown, died Thursday, August 5, 2010 at Georgetown Memorial Hospital.

Funeral services will be Sunday, August 8, 2010 at 3:00 p.m. at First Baptist Church.

Kristin L. Kort

Kristin Daly Lane Kort of Pawleys Island, SC passed away on August 2, 2010. She was 30. She was born in Greensboro, North Carolina on June 20, 1980. Kristin was raised in her beloved town of Pawleys Island, with sand between her toes. Her love of the coastal beauty was evident in everything she became.

Kristin graduated from Waccamaw High School in 1998. She attended the College of Charleston and graduated in 2002 with a BA in Business Administration.

Kristin spent two years in Birmingham, Alabama as a production assistant for HEALTH magazine and a start team member for Cottage Living Magazine. Even though her career was flourishing, she longed for home. Upon return, Kristin courageously began her own business KDL Photography, Take a Peek Virtual Tours in 2005. Her pictures revealed the beauty with which she saw the world. Kristin soon became a well known and respected member of the business community.

Kristin's greatest joy in life was meeting and marrying "The One Whom My Soul Loves," Sean Allen Kort. They were wed on May 30, 2009, and enjoyed one blissful year of marriage.

Kristin's love for the Lord was evident in every aspect of her being. She served in many capacities at All Saints Church, Pawleys. Kristin's joy in life came from making others happy. Her bright blue eyes always lit up every room and her zest for life was contagious.

Kristin is survived by her husband, Sean Allen Kort; father David Michael Lane and mother Martha Daly Lane; sisters Elizabeth Ruth Lane and Katherine Lane Bellamy and her husband Scott; brother David Michael Lane Jr.; grandmother Josephine Floyd Lane; grandfather Dr. Roswald Bernard Daly; mother-in-law Mary Katherine Purvis; father-in-law Regis Henry Kort and his wife Donna; brother-in-law Michael Regis Kort; grandfather-in-law Kenneth Leroy Purvis; great grandmother-in-law Dorothy Geyer Purvis.

Visitation with friends and family was held Thursday, August 5th from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. at Goldfinch Funeral Home, Litchfield-Pawleys Island Chapel, 202 Hinnant Lane. A service in Celebration of Life is to be held at 10 a.m. Friday, August 6th at All Saints Church, 3560 Kings River Road, Pawleys Island.

Although Kristin's life would seem too short to many, those who were touched by her understood that the quality of existence far exceeds the quantity of time in which one lives.

Deedee Martin

Deedee Martin, 43, of Georgetown died August 3, 2010 at her sister's home.

Born on January 4, 1967 in Thomasville, GA, she was a daughter of Milton K. Martin and Patricia B. Martin. Miss Martin was a member of Ringel Heights Baptist Church and was an Instructional Assistant at Gilbert High School in Gilbert.

Survivors include her mother and father of Georgetown; maternal grandmother, Lillian Braswell of Georgetown; paternal grandmother, Sue Martin of Murrells Inlet; one sister, Marisa Cooper (David) of Georgetown; one brother, Greg Martin of Georgetown; two nieces, Tori Bowers (Robert) of Charleston and Madison Cooper of Georgetown; two nephews, Keith Martin of Georgetown and Jarrett Cooper of Georgetown; one great nephew, Brayden Bowers of Charleston; a very special friend, Candace Berry of Pelion; and several aunts and uncles.

Funeral Services were held at 4 p.m. Thursday, August 5, 2010 at First Baptist Church, Georgetown with the Rev. Ted Sherrill, Dr. Ralph Gregg and Rev. Themos Cribb officiating. Burial followed in the Pennyroyal Memorial Gardens.

The family received friends from 2-4 p.m. Thursday at First Baptist Church Georgetown.

Mary D. Shackelford

Mary Dennison Shackelford, 90 of the North Santee Community, Georgetown, South Carolina died Friday, July 30, 2010 in Georgetown, SC.

Funeral services for Mrs. Shackelford will be held 4 p.m. on Friday, August 6, 2010 at Mt. Zion AME Church. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

Mrs. Shackleford was born August 13, 1919 in Georgetown, South Carolina to Willie Dennison and Mrs. Eliza Bradley Dennison.

She was a member of Mt. Zion AME Church where she served as a member of the following: Senior Steward Board, Women's Missionary Society, Mt. Zion Choir and Gospel Choir. She attended Georgetown County Public Schools and worked as a seamstress.

She is survived by two sons: Herbert Dennison, Sr. of Georgetown, SC and David Dennison of Pennsauken, NJ; two daughters: Theresa Walker & Patricia Scipio of Philadelphia, PA; four siblings: Leo Dennison of Southern Pines, NC, Retired Major Essau Pyatt of Petersburg, VA, Viola Dennison of Philadelphia, PA and Albertha Knowing Hemingway of Bronx, NY; 18 grandchildren; 12 great grand children; 5 great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral service arrangements are entrusted and directed by Wilds Funeral Home, LLC.

Angela L. Smith-Hagan

Angela Leanora Smith-Hagan of Surfside Beach, SC, 72 years old, died August 2, 2010, at her daughter's home in Florissant, MO, where she had resided since May 2009. Ms. Smith-Hagan had battled cancer for more than a decade, malignancy that began as breast cancer and metastasized to her bone structure and other organs.

Ms. Smith-Hagan, the daughter of Dr. Francis Max and Louise Laura Ballentine Smith, was born March 30, 1938, in Kansas City, MO, and was reared in Carrollton, MO. She graduated from the University of Missouri at Columbia and later earned two Master's Degrees from other universities. In Durham, NC, she taught elementary "special education" classes and later, in Georgetown, SC, served as a counselor in an elementary school setting. She retired from the school systems in both States.

Ms. Smith-Hagan was preceded in death by both natural parents, a stepmother, Berniece Allen Smith, and a brother, Max Dayton Smith, all from the Carrollton, MO, area. She is survived by a daughter and grandson, Toni Lea Lawrence and Taylor James Jones, both of Florissant, MO. Also surviving are a son and daughter-in-law, Dr. Robert D., Jr. ("Skip") and Melissa Aduddell Hagan, and four granddaughters, Tiffany Grace Hagan, Abigail Louise Hagan, Janie Mei-Li Hagan, and Megan Zhen Hagan, all of Cary, NC.

A memorial service will be held Sunday, August 15, 2010, 2:00 P.M., at Glenn's Bay Baptist Church,1835 Glenn's Bay Rd., Surfside Beach, SC 29575.

The family would welcome donations in Angela's name to "Susan G. Komen For the Cure." Flowers should be delivered to the Comfort Inn, 1201 U.S. Hwy. 17N, Surfside Beach, SC 29575, Attention Toni Lawrence, but not before August 13, 2010.

Elias G. Whalen

Elias "Eli" Garrett Whalen, 28, of Georgetown, the husband of Joyce Phillips Whalen, departed this life Sunday, August 1, 2010, in Charleston, South Carolina.

Mr. Whalen was born a son of Michael Timothy Whalen and Pamela Chapman Whalen on November 24, 1981, in Norfolk, Virginia. He was a graduate Georgetown High School and was employed as a Tugboat Captain for Steven's Towing. Mr. Whalen was licensed as an Officer through the United States Merchant Marine and was an avid hunter and fisherman.

He leaves behind his wife; his parents and their companions, Patti Reese and Willie Williams; a brother, Matt Whalen; a sister, Vanessa (Derek) Mason; his maternal grandmother, Anna Love Chapman; three nephews, Owen Mason, Nicholas Taylor, and Tristan Phillips; and two nieces, Lindsay Phillips and Chelsea Nobles.

He was predeceased by his paternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Ronald Whalen, Sr. and his maternal grandfather, Lynn Arch Chapman.

Funeral service will be 4 p.m., Friday, August 6, 2010, at the Wayne United Methodist Church with interment in the Holmes Cemetery, Lamberttown, directed by the Georgetown Chapel of McKenzie Funeral Home.

Visitation was 7-9 p.m., Thursday, August 5, 2010, at the Georgetown Chapel (843) 546-0198.
