Arthur Clark

Arthur G. “Boom” Clark, 1st Sgt. USMC Retired, passed away on September 11, 2012 at Tidelands Community Hospice House in Georgetown, S.C.

“Boom” as he liked to be called, was born on April 30, 1930 in Brooklyn, N.Y.  

He was raised by his foster parents Helen and Lewis Bassett in West Haven, Conn.  

After graduating from Notre Dame High School in West Haven in 1950, where he was a member of the football team and the school band, Boom enlisted in the United States Marine Corps where he served until he retired as a 1st Sergeant in 1972.

While in the USMC, Boom served in various places around the world including Korea, two tours in Vietnam where he received the Bronze Star Medal, Hawaii, Lebanon and aboard the submarine tender USS Simon Lake in Scotland where he was head of the Armed Guard Detachment.

Upon his retirement Boom settled in Port Royal, S.C. where he joined both the VFW Post 8760 and the AMVETS Post 70.  

As a member of the AMVETS he served several terms as Post Commander and was instrumental in the land acquisition and completion of a major building expansion project to the post facility.

Boom is survived by his foster sister Eileen Sause and her husband John of Conway, SC., his foster brother William Bassett and Dot McHugh of North Providence, R.I. and special friends, Sherry and Jim Davis of Port Royal, S.C.

There will be no calling hours. A graveside ceremony with full military honors will be carried out immediately prior to internment on Friday, September 14, 2012 at 1 p.m. in the Beaufort National Cemetery.

Donald Cusack

Donald O’Brien Cusack, 58, the beloved husband of Vera Nell Smith Cusack of Georgetown, S.C., departed this life Saturday evening, Sept. 8, 2012 at his residence.

Mr. Cusack was born the son of Herbert Leo Cusack and Elease Carolyn Burkette Cusack on February 22, 1954 in Georgetown.  

He was a commercial fisherman and a member of the Rock Pentecostal Holiness Church.  

He was a United States Marine veteran.  

Mr. Cusack was a devoted husband, cherished father, and a loving grandfather.

He leaves behind his wife; seven children, Daphne Ann C. Johnson, Debra “Danielle” C. (Joe) Anderson, Anna Marie Cusack, Monica Briann Cusack, Chadwick Madison Cribb, Crystal Lanell Cribb, and Amanda Faye Ryals; and 20 grandchildren.  He also leaves behind, a brother, Herbert Leo “Herbie” Cusack; and two sisters, Juanita Carolyn (Larry) Plogman and Melanie C. Brown.

He was predeceased by his parents; a son, Donald O. Cusack Jr.; a daughter, Christina Carolyn C. Forbes; and a brother, Johnnie James Cusack.

A Going Home Celebration was held at 2 p.m. on Tuesday afternoon, Sept. 11, 2012 at Rock Pentecostal Holiness Church.  

Interment followed in the Pennyroyal Memorial Gardens, directed by the Georgetown Chapel of McKenzie Funeral Home.

Visitation was from 6 to 8 p.m. on Monday evening, Sept. 10, 2012, in the sanctuary of Rock Pentecostal Holiness Church.

Lucian Greene

Lucian J. Greene, formerly of Georgetown died on Sept. 4, 2012 at Medical University of S.C. Hospital, Charleston, S.C. from injuries sustained in an automobile accident.

Funeral services for Mr. Greene will be held at noon on Wednesday, Sept. 12, 2012 at Bethel AME Church, Georgetown, conducted by Rev. Dr. C.M. Ragin.  

Burial follows at Bethel’s cemetery.

Viewing will take place on Wednesday from 10 a.m. until the time of service in the sanctuary of the church.

Mr. Greene was born on January 8, 1921 in Georgetown, a son of Walter Greene and Mrs. Carrie Smith Greene.  

After having served his country during World War II in the United States Army he moved to New York City.  

He married the former Miss Mozella Manigault (now deceased) and was blessed with the births and rearing of two children.

Following his retirement from  Lewis Purses in New York, he moved back south and settled in Lake City, S.C.  

However, he retained his membership at Bethel AME Church in Georgetown and was dutiful there until his death.

Surviving are his children, Lucille Washington and Walter Greene; and two sisters, Ora Lee Anderson and Louise Williams.

Tommy Hardwick

Tommy Griffin Hardwick, 75, widower of Kathryn J. Hardwick, passed away Friday, Sept. 7, 2012 at Georgetown Memorial Hospital.

Born on July 16, 1937, in Conway, he was a son of the late William Arthur Hardwick and the late Pearl Bellamy Hardwick. Mr. Hardwick was a faithful member of Eastside Free Will Baptist Church where he served as a choir member, former deacon, usher and Sunday School Superintendent.

Mr. Hardwick was a US Navy veteran and was a founding member of the local United Steel Workers Union.

He was a Clemson Tigers fan and enjoyed watching NASCAR racing, especially Dale Earnhardt Sr.

Survivors include one son, Rev. Tommy Hardwick Jr. of Georgetown; one grandchild, Brooklyn Nicole Hardwick; four brothers, Blondel Hardwick (Anna) of Conway, Vonnie Hardwick (Bev) of Conway, Estin Hardwick of Memphis, Tenn. and John Hardwick (Patricia) of Conway; five sisters, Essie Adair of Georgetown, Arthurleen Alford (Cole) of Georgetown, Joyce Ann Cunningham (Charles) of North Charleston, Betty Alford of Georgetown and Judy Hardwick of Goldsboro, N.C.; and a number of nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by one brother, Wade Hardwick.

Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 10, 2012 at Eastside Free Will Baptist Church with the Rev. Raymond Haselden.

Burial followed in Pennyroyal Memorial Gardens.

The family received friends from 6 to 8 p.m. on Sunday at Eastside Free Will Baptist Church.

Thomas Kirby   

Thomas Roland Kirby, known as T.R. or Tom, 97, of Horrell Hill, S.C. died at Palmetto Baptist Medical Center, September 5, 2012, following a brief illness with his loving family by his side.  

He was born October 15, 1914, in Harpers, S.C. to the late Bachman Doar and Mary Spry Montgomery Hudson Doar.  

Upon the death of his mother, when he was seven days old, he was adopted by James Israel Kirby and Rosa Estelle Hicks Kirby of Andrews, S.C. where he attended school, graduated from Andrews High School and lived until a young man.

He will be greatly missed by his family, nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews and many friends in Horrell Hill and Lower Richland.

Mr. Kirby is survived by his son, William Roland (Bill) Kirby and his wife,  Camille of Horrell Hill; grandson, William Roland Kirby Jr. (Billy) and his wife, Lezlee of Columbia, S.C.; a granddaughter, Katherine Kirby Senter and her husband, Todd, of Advance, N.C; great-granddaughters, Mary Alice and Elizabeth Ann Kirby; and a great-grandson, Coleman Franklin Senter.  

He was predeceased by his wife of 57 years, Mary Claytor McKinnon Kirby; brothers, John Bailey Harris, Joseph B. Hudson, Bachman Doar and sister, Mary Emma Doar.

T. R. was a faithful member of Richland Presbyterian Church, Eastover, S.C., where he served as an Elder.  

Some of his hobbies were reading and watching movies until his eye sight failed in recent years.  Following his retirement and settling in Horrell Hill, he enjoyed many projects using his favorite New Holland tractor, riding in his golf cart, attending The Horrell Hill Supper Club and his daily breakfast meeting with friends.

After graduating from high school, he worked a variety of jobs, including a Coca-Cola route in Georgetown and with Nashville Bridge and Iron Company during the construction of the Coastal Highway 17 over the Waccamaw and PeeDee Rivers.  

In 1941 he moved to Charleston where he worked at the Charleston Naval Shipyard through World War II.

It was there that he learned his trade as an iron worker, repairing and building U.S. Navy vessels, including the building of LST's and LSM's, landing craft used for D-Day in 1944.

When the war ended, T. R., Mary Claytor and their young son, Bill, moved to her home in Horrell Hill.  

For several years he worked on various bridge projects and began working for Wilhoit International (steel erectors) in 1954.  He retired from Wilhoit in April 1984 after 30 years, progressing from steel erection superintendent to project manager to corporate vice-president.

This work carried him all over the Eastern Seaboard and finally to Cape Canaveral, Fla., where he was the erection superintendent for the building of Complex 39 A&B for the Apollo Mission.  

He was involved in the rebuilding of this complex for the space shuttle program.  

His last project was working on the completion of Epcot, Orlando, Fla.

Visitation was from 4 to 6 p.m. on Saturday, September 8, 2012, at the family home in Horrell Hill.  

Graveside services were held Sunday, September 9, 2012, at 3 p.m. at the Beulah Baptist Church Cemetery, Horrell Hill, conducted by the Rev. Craig Wilkes.

Inez Morant

Inez Alston Morant of the Plantersville community in Georgetown, died on Thursday, Sept. 6, 2012 at Tulane Memorial Hospital, New Orleans, La.  

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, Sept. 12, 2012 at 1 pm at Bethel AME Church, Plantersville, with burial following at Mt. Carmel Baptist Church Cemetery.

Mrs. Morant was born on November 5, 1953 in Georgetown, S.C., a daughter of Robert Alston and Mrs. Jannie Knowlin Alston, both deceased.

She graduated from Choppee High School and attended trade school afterwards.  

Until a disability intervened, she worked for a number of years as a machine operator at AVX Corporation of Myrtle Beach, S.C.

A devoted parishioner and community worker, she was a faithful member of Mt. Carmel Baptist Church, a member of Beach Street Chapter #299 Order of the Eastern Star, Kabba Court #127, Daughter of Isis and George Herriot Assembly #256, Order of the Golden Circle.  

The latter organizations will conduct memorial services for Mrs. Morant at the Wilds Chapel on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m.  

Visitation will continue until 8pm.

Surviving are her husband, David Morant; a son, Anthony Morant; step-son, Julius Owens, daughter, Michelle Alston; brothers, Samuel, Buster and Harold Alston; and two sisters, Betty Alston and Marthena Alston.  

Arrangments are under the direction of Wilds Funeral Home.

Ector Shepard

Ector Daniel Shepard, 82, of Georgetown, S.C. died Sunday, Sept. 9, 2012, in Tidelands Hospice House in Georgetown.

Mr. Shepard was born Sept. 22, 1929, in Kingstree, S.C., the son of the late Ector W. and Elise Daniel Shepard.  

He was a graduate of Kingstree High School, Presbyterian College and the LSU School of Banking.

He then began a career in banking, retiring form First Citizens Bank. Mr. Shepard served in the U.S. Army as a 1st Lt. and was a member of Union Presbyterian Church.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife, Bevis Boyd Shepard.

Surviving are his daughter, Carol S. Morgan (C.J), of Dallas, Texas; his son, Ector Daniel “Dan” Shepard, Jr. (Penny) of Manning; two granddaughters, Matelon S. DeFreese (David)of Summerville, and Carrie Morgan of Arlington, Texas; and one grandson, Seth Morgan, of Dallas, Texas.

Graveside funeral services were held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 11, 2012, in Union Presbyterian Church Cemetery.

The family received friends from 6 to 8 p.m. on Monday at Williamsburg Funeral Home in Kingstree.

Mabel Walker

Mabel Isaac Walker, 89, of Georgetown, S.C., widow of William P. (Bill) Walker, passed away peacefully in Mt. Pleasant on Sunday evening with her loving family members at her side.

The second child of Thomas and Catherine Isaac, Mabel was born on November 19, 1922 in Georgetown, South Carolina.

She retired as Administrative Assistant to the Superintendent of the Georgetown County Department of Education.  

She married the love of her life, Bill Walker, on February 28, 1946 in Georgetown. They met while he was stationed at the US Marine Corps Air Station in Georgetown after World War II.

She was always deeply mournful of the passing of her youngest son, Robert Walker, in 1989.

She is survived by three sons,  Billy and Amelia Long Walker of  Lexington and their children, Will and Amelia Waring Walker and Bette; Tommy and Vicki Simmons Walker of Mt. Pleasant and their children Thomas and Matt;  Cary and Dina Shuman Walker of Mt. Pleasant, and their children Mary Catherine, Cary and Lawrence.  Numerous nieces and nephews who were very much a part of her life survive her as well.

She is also survived by her loving and devoted sister, Beverly Isaac Turbeville of Georgetown.

Her parents and siblings, Joe Isaac, Sr. of Georgetown, Daniel Isaac of Myrtle Beach, Kathleen Cantwell of Sullivan's Island, Frances Isaac Boss of Virginia all preceded her in death.

She was a devout Catholic and life-long member of St. Mary, Our Lady of Ransom, Catholic Church in Georgetown. She was baptized there as were all of her children. She attended Holy Mass as long as she was physically able.

Mabel was an outgoing, personable, social person with an engaging laugh and smile for all. There was no social occasion that she did not enjoy the company of those present.

She took up the game of golf after her last child was born at the age of 39.

She was a competitor of the highest order and went on to win many women's golf tournaments and several club championships at the Winyah Bay Country Club.

There was nothing more fun to her than that five-some of her boys and husband on a Sunday afternoon where the rules of golf were strictly observed.  

As recently as a few months ago she longed to play just 9 more holes!

The family is deeply grateful for the loving attention provided her by the Franke Home of Mt. Pleasant where she spent her last year, and to The Reverend Ron Farrell of St. Mary's for his spiritual encouragement and support.

Visitation will be held at the Mayer Funeral Home in Georgetown from 6 to 8 p.m. with a Wake Service commencing at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, September 12, 2012 in Georgetown.  

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Mary's at 11 a.m. on Thursday, September 13, with interment at Elmwood Cemetery following.
