Mackie Altman Sr.
Mackie Gordon Altman Sr., 87, of Pawleys Island died Monday March 8, 2010 at his residence.
A Memorial service will be held Thursday, March 11, 2010 at 7:00 p.m. in the chapel of Graham Funeral Home.
He was born February 17, 1923 in Georgetown County; a son of the late John Gilbert Altman and the late Annie Carraway Altman.
He was a member of the Quarter Century Club at International Paper Company where he was employed for 39 years. He enjoyed fishing and spending time with his family and friends.
Surviving are four children, Mackie (Dolly) Altman Jr. of Pawleys Island, Claude L.”Buddy” (Jenny) Altman of Murrells Inlet, Rocky G. (Joyce) Altman of Georgetown and Debra Walker of Georgetown; three brothers, Lawrence Altman, Tommy Altman and Albert Altman; 3 sisters, Josephine Heath, Edline Hucks and Tootsie Watkins; eight grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and a number of nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, Mr. Altman was predeceased by his wife, Mildred Casselman Altman; and two sons, Donald J. Altman and Timothy Altman.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 7 p.m. Thursday prior to the service.

Margaret Bissell
Margaret “Tunie” Carter Bissell of Pawleys Island, SC, died Monday, March 8, 2010, in Palm Bay, FL.
She was born June 14, 1924, in Mountain Rest, SC.
She is survived by her sister, Ena Carter Shirley; her daughters, Margaret Bissell Walker (Bill) and Anna Bissell Bourne (Frank); her daughter-in-law Melissa Bissell; and her grandchildren, Emily Bourne Kirby (Cary), Suzanne Bourne Swindling (Mike) and Wilson Murray Bissell.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Samuel Wickham Bissell Jr,; a son, Samuel Wickham Bissell III; and her grandson, Samuel Wickham Bissell IV.
A memorial service will be held at St. Paul’s Waccamaw United Methodist Church, Pawleys Island, SC on Saturday, March 13, at 2 p.m.
Norris Bryant
Norris Riley Bryant, 81, of Harrelson Road in Georgetown died Thursday, March 4, 2010 at his residence.
He was born July 10, 1928 a son of the late Abner and Mary Ella Hill Bryant.
Norris enjoyed woodworking, fishing and traveling.
He worked with Riley Stoker as a field superintendent for the installation of fossil fuel power plants for 44 years.
This allowed him to travel to many states in the country.
He served in the U.S. Army and was honorably discharged on April 19, 1937. He was also a Shriner.
Mr. Norris is survived by his wife of 27 years, Ernestine Lambert Bryant of the home; two sons, Ralph Bryant (Georgia) of Conway and Sam Walters (Teresa) of Georgetown; two daughters, Hilda Ray (Allen) of Georgetown and Lisa Wiggins of Murrells Inlet; two brothers, William Bryan “Bill” Bryant of Easley and Ford Bryant (Stacie) of Mississippi; five grandchildren; and many other family and friends who will miss him.
Services will be private.

Samuel Cochran Jr.
Samuel Moses Cochran Jr., 41, of Hemingway, SC, died on Saturday, March 6, 2010 in Hemingway, SC.
Funeral services for Mr. Cochran will be held at 2 p.m. on Thursday, March 11, 2010 at Trinity AME Church.
Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Mr. Cochran was born February 14, 1969 in Georgetown, SC to Samuel Moses Cochran and Mrs. Annie Lawrence Cochran.
He was a graduate of Pleasant Hill High School and a member of Trinity AME Church.
Mr. Cochran was also employed with Premium Forklift as a forklift operator and the Georgetown County Detention Center as a mechanic most recently.
He is survived by his mother, Mrs. Annie Bell Cochran of Hemingway, SC; his son, Jamar Cochran and two daughters: Sameika Cochran and Tyeishia Cochran all of Georgetown, SC; Three sisters: Phondasena Wright and Colina Bellamy of Hemingway, SC, and Zella Grant of Pawleys Island, SC; two brothers: Deron Cochran of North Charleston, SC and Quinton Doctor of Rock Hill, SC; three grandchildren.
Viewing will be held from Noon on Thursday, March 11, 2010 until 2 p.m. in the sanctuary of Trinity AME Church.
Funeral service arrangements are entrusted and directed by Wilds Funeral Home, LLC.
Thelma Gandy
Mrs. Thelma Bauer Gandy, age 86, of Cartersville, Georgia, formerly of Andrews, South Carolina, passed away Sunday, March 7, 2010, at a local health care center.
Mrs. Gandy was born June 21, 1923 in Andrews, a daughter of the late John Joseph Bauer Sr. and Martha Linn Bauer.
She graduated from Andrews High School and was a member of Andrews Presbyterian Church.
Mrs. Gandy was employed by Martin Drug Store in Andrews. She was married December 22, 1941 to Roland B. Gandy, who preceded her in death on December 8, 1994.
She was also preceded in death by her parents; a son, Oscar Wayne Gandy; a daughter, Kitty Reamer; and by brothers and sisters, Glenn Bauer, Roma Bauer, Ralph Bauer, Ester McKenzie, Luella McKenzie and Russell Bauer.
Survivors include her children; Leonard Gandy and wife Linda of Cartersville, Ga., and Jeffery E. Gandy and wife Gayle of Columbia; a brother, John Joseph Bauer, Jr. and wife Katherine of Andrews, South Carolina; a son-in-law, Jim Reamer; grandchildren; Lara Lillie, Roland B. Gandy, II, Jeremy Gandy, Cheryl Ryan, Donna Skinner, Neil Reamer and Edwin Reamer; great-grandchildren, Richard Chester Lillie, IV, Jenna Lillie, Dawson Lillie, Roland Bruin Gandy, III, Jackson Gandy, Colt Freeman, Will Ryan, Jason Reamer and Leigh Reamer; a number of nieces and nephews also survive.

Walker Inman Jr.
Walker Patterson “Skipper” Inman, Jr. of Grover, Wyoming died peacefully in his sleep on February 24, 2010 in Denver, Colorado. He was born March 11, 1952 in Florence, S. C., the only child of Walker Patterson Inman and Georgia Polin.
He was orphaned at the age of 10 and lived with his aunt Doris Duke, internationally known heiress and philanthropist.
They remained close until her death and Walker was appointed executor of her estate.
Walker was a passionate free spirit, and adventurer and explorer, a true swashbuckler.
His total life was centered around his family.
As a family man his two children, Patterson and Georgia, were more important to him than life itself.
His true love and soul mate Daralee gave him the contentment he was searching for his whole life.
Walker traveled on his much loved yacht, “Devine Decadence”, from South Carolina and discovered the South Pacific.
He also spent a lot of time with his nephews and niece, David, Bart, Mat, and Heather.
After a major refit, he took the boat back to Hawaii, meeting his friend and Captain Brett Armstrong.
The boat is now kept in New Zealand, where he enjoyed extensive cruising and dinner parties on board.
He was a gourmet cook and an avid gun, knife, sword, and steam engine collector.
He looked forward to training his camel, Sinbad.
A pyrotechnics expert, his 4th of July fireworks displays are a legend in the Wyoming Valley below his mountaintop home in Grover.
His quiet generosity changed many lives.
Mr. Inman divided his time between his Grover ranch, “Outlaw Acres” and Greenfield Plantation near Georgetown, South Carolina, that he inherited from his father.
He is survived by his sister Susan and her children, David, Bart, Mat, and Heather.
He will be sadly missed by his faithful Mastiffs, Doolie and Doolie, Jr., “DJ”; his twin children, Georgia Noel Lahi Inman and Walker Patterson Inman, III; along with his wife, Daralee Inman.
Services will be held at the Holy Family Catholic Church, Afton, Wyoming on March 11, 2010 at 1 pm and at Greenfield Plantation, 2713 Choppee Rd., Georgetown, S. C. on March 13, 2010 at 1 pm.
Rev. Daniel Jiles
Rev. Daniel Jiles, 87, of 311 Le Dan Drive, Georgetown, SC, departed this life on Saturday, March 6, 2010 at his residence.
Funeral Services will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday at Greater St. Paul AME Church in the Oatland Community of Georgetown with Rev. Rosalyn Grant Coleman, officiating.
Burial follows in Nazareth AME Church Cemetery under the direction of McKnight-Fraser Funeral Homes.
A Wake Service will be held Wednesday Evening from 6 to 7 p.m. at Nazareth AME Church in the Choppee Community.
Rev. Jiles, son of the late Leonard Jiles and Hester Ford Jiles was born July 27, 1922 in the Choppee Community of Georgetown, SC.
He attended Georgetown County Schools and Dickerson Theological Seminary, he was a member of Nazareth AME Church where he served as a class leader, Trustee and helped build Nazareth AME Church.
After being ordained as a Itinerant Minister in the AME Church he pastored Nazareth-Sutton, Dickerson, St. John-Morrisville, Mt. Ararat and St. Paul-Oatland AME Churches over a span of 40 years.
He served on board of Georgetown County Water and Sewer District, Georgetown County Voter Registration, Choppee Community Organization, Worshipful Master of Choppee Masonic Lodge #394, Bright Morning Star #356, Georgetown Ministerial Alliance, The Community Cleanup Committee and many others.
He fought for the community to acquire rural water, Paving of the roads, a fire station and the Daniel Jiles Community Mini Park.
Survivors: his wife, Verdelle G. Jiles, Georgetown, SC, his children, Carrie J. Smith, Georgetown, SC and Daniel Jiles Jr., Englewood, NJ; two grandchildren reared as his own, Shelia Jiles and Fred Jiles of Georgetown, SC; two step-children, Erna Perkins, Waldorf, MD and Ernest Perkins, Oklahoma City, OK; one brother, Thomas, Giles, Georgetown, SC; 10 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
Lewis Maness Sr.
Brigadier General Lewis “Chippy” E. Maness Sr., 90, of Wellington, FL and Georgetown, SC, passed away on Friday, March 5, 2010.
Born in Georgetown, SC, he was the son of William and Mabel (Rouse) Maness.
Lewis graduated from Clemson University in 1941 with a civil engineering degree.
Affectionately known as Chippy, he was a star quarterback for the Tigers.
He also was on the first team to win the Cotton Bowl in 1940 along side of star quarterback Banks McFadden under legendary coach Frank Howard.
Upon graduation he was commissioned Second Lieutenant in the U.S. Army.
He married Mary Dartha Craig of Georgetown and reported to active duty.
Maness served as platoon leader, company commander and battalion commander for the 47th infantry and 9th infantry division.
He participated in eight major campaigns with the 47th in the European Theater and was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross, the Distinguished Service Metal, the Legion of Merit, Silver Star, Bronze Star, French Croix de Guerre and the Purple Heart. Brigadier General Lewis E. Maness Sr. served Our Great Country Honorably for 32 years.
The General’s memory will be cherished by his children, Lewis E. Maness Jr., James F. (Melissa) Maness and Ruth Ann Propper; grandchildren, Michelle (Thomas) Mahoney, Timothy Maness and Matthew Maness; great grandchildren, Tommy, Maggie and Devon.
A visitation will be held 11-1 PM on Tuesday March 16, 2010 at Palms West Funeral Home with a service beginning at 1 PM.
Following services, Brigadier General Lewis E. Maness Sr. will be buried together with Mary, his loving wife of 53 years, in South Florida National Cemetery with Full Military Honors.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Lewis's name to Hospice of Palm Beach County, 5300 East Avenue, West Palm Beach, FL 33407.
