FUNERAL SERVICES

Lewis Etheridge

Lewis Benjamin “Red” Etheridge, 57, passed away on January 11, 2010, at Georgetown Memorial Hospital.

Mr. Etheridge was born the son of Mattie Irene Long Etheridge Gibson and the late Junior Mack Etheridge on April 13, 1952, in the Warsaw community of Andrews, SC.

Surviving in addition to his mother are: one brother, Charlie F. (Brenda) Etheridge, and five sisters, Patricia Ann (Wayne) Poston, Mattie Mae (Charlie) Miller, Jane (Onnie) Poston, Daisy (Ben) Norris, and Dorothy K. Poston.

Funeral services will be 2PM, Thursday, January 14, 2010, in the Georgetown Chapel with interment in the Ivey Cemetery, Hwy. 527, near Andrews directed by the McKenzie Funeral Home.

Visitation will be 6-9 PM, Wednesday, January 13, 2010, in the Georgetown Chapel, 843-546-0198.

Betty Holbrook

Betty Kolb (Brimhall) Holbrook died January 9th, 2010.  She was born June 16, 1926 in Sumter, SC daughter to Joe Kolb and Isabelle Pearlestine Reams Carlson.  Betty was predeceased by her husband of 57 years William Douglas Holbrook, MD.

Surviving are Sister Joe Ann McCormick and three children Douglas Mitchell Holbrook and wife Annette of Alpharetta, GA, Pamela Gayle Holbrook-Vautrin of Bethesda, MD, and Cindy H. Justis and husband Michael L Justis of Alpharetta, GA.

Her four grandchildren, McKenzie Holbrook, Joe Vautrin, William Justis and Caleb Justis, also survive her.

Betty was raised in Winston Salem, NC, attended R. J. Reynolds High School (class of ’43) and Women’s College in Greensboro, NC where she graduated with Phi Beta Kappa honors.

Betty married William Douglas Holbrook in 1947 after he received his medical degree from the Bowman Gray School of Medicine in 1946.

Doug and Betty lived briefly in Jersey City, NJ where Doug interned and after a commission with the United States Navy at Camp Lejeune, NC moved to Charlotte, NC in 1953.

Doug and Betty shared an active life raising their three children, gardening, and involved in their community.

Betty was a member of Providence Methodist Church where she served as President of the Women’s Society.

Betty’s life touched many friends and neighbors with whom she generously shared her time, knowledge and fellowship.

Beginning in 1981 Doug and Betty lived part time at the Debordieu Colony in Georgetown, SC and became full time residents in 1985.

Betty joined Duncan United Methodist Church, where her generous heart, dedication to family and God were well known.  

During her years in the Low Country, Betty was also active in the Low Country Herb Society and the North Carolina Herb Society.  She created and tended the first Herb Garden of Brookgreen Gardens.

In 1999, Doug and Betty relocated back to Charlotte, NC to reside at the Cypress Community.

Betty soon became a generous member of Mouzon United Methodist Church where she gave tirelessly of her time and efforts and continued her study of the Bible.

She was always ready to lend a helping hand when and wherever needed.

After the loss of Doug in 2004, Betty moved to Alpharetta, GA to be with family while she courageously and selflessly battled Alzheimer’s.

Known as Betty Ray to family and close friends, she knew not the fear of Goliath nor held in her heart no less than charity for all.  She increased our courage to carry on the good, the best of struggles.

A memorial service will be held at Mouzon United Methodist Church, 3100 Selwyn Ave, Charlotte, NC on Saturday, January 16th, 2010 at 3 PM.

Reception following the service in Flynn Hall.

Georgia Jefferson

Georgia B. Jefferson died January 5, 2010 at Georgetown Memorial Hospital.

Funeral services were Monday, January 11, 2010, at Greater Gordon Chapel AME Church, directed by Linen-Knox Funeral Home.

Burial was in the church cemetery.

Mrs. Jefferson was born on November 25, 1937 in Murrells Inlet, SC, a daughter of the loate Frank and Thomasina Russell Simmons.

She attended Georgetown County schools.

She was a member of Greater Gordon Chapel AME Church.

Surviving are one daughter, Tena M. Greene; two sons, Jack Simmons and Melvin T. Jefferson; three sisters, Josephine Crawford, Lou Ethel Grate and Loretta Simmons; and two brothers, James Simmons and Theodore Russell.

Rev. Alec J. Powell

Rev. Alec J. Powell, 88, the widower of Hannah Ilene Poston Powell and a retired minister of the South Carolina Conference of the International Pentecostal Holiness Church, went home to be with the Lord on Sunday morning, January 10, 2010.

Mr. Powell was born the son of Mitchell Jones Powell and Marjan Eliza Prosser Powell on September 9, 1921, in the Possum Fork community of Johnsonville.  He lived in the Scranton community until 1972.  He was bi-vocational the majority of his life as a SC farmer of various crops and livestock and skilled carpenter.

After accepting the call into the ministry, Mr. Powell was licensed as a minister in June 1966 and ordained in June 1970. His ministry spanned 20 yrs. of which he served the following churches: Antioch PH Church, East Florence PH Church, Lakeview PH Church, Bamberg PH Church, Lakewood PH Church, and Mt. Olive PH Church.  He retired in 1990 due health problems.

He wrote his Legacy by the labors of his hands as he toiled the land, framed buildings, and shepherded the sheep of God.  His life is defined by the words of II Timothy 2:15 “A workman that needed not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the Word of Truth.”

Alec and Hannah were married on September 28, 1940 and celebrated 66_ years together. From their blessed union survives: five children, Charlie (Sophia) Powell of Lake City, Mike (Donna) Powell of Bonneau, Rev. Tony (Gwynn Ann) Powell of Lake Placid, FL, Sybil Troutman of Barnwell, and Marjan (Rev. Aldon) Johnson of Georgetown; 13 grandchildren; and 13 great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be 2 PM Wednesday, January 13, 2010 in the Stone Chapel Pentecostal Holiness Church with interment in the Riverside Cemetery directed by the Hemingway Chapel of McKenzie Funeral Home.

Rev. Powell will lie-in-state at the Tabernacle of the SC Conference IPHC from 3-9 on Tuesday, January 12, 2010.  The Powell family will receive family and friends from 6-9 at the Tabernacle.
