FUNERAL SERVICES
George Chiha
George Joseph Chiha, 87, of Georgetown, widower of Margaret Sayeg Chiha, died Wednesday, December 28, 2011, at Tidelands Community Hospice House.
Mr. Chiha was born in Brooklyn, N.Y., on September 19, 1924, a son of the late Alfred Chiha and Mary Amara Chiha.
He grew up in Hudson County, N.J., and served in the Army Air Corps during World War II.
Mr. Chiha retired as owner of Chiha Sales, Inc. in North Bergen, N.Y., and moved to Georgetown three years ago.
He attended Saint Mary Our Lady of Ransom Catholic Church.
Surviving are a daughter, Sharon Joseph (Tom) of Camden; two sons, Edward Chiha (Sarah) and George Chiha (Helen), both of Georgetown; eight grandchildren, Tommy Joseph, Lori Butehorn, George, Wesley, David, Edward, and Ken Chiha, and Cristen Geestman; seven great-grandchildren; a sister, Isabel Wittke of Jackson, N.J.; and a number of nieces and nephews.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday morning, December 31, 2011, at Saint Mary Our Lady of Ransom Catholic Church.
Officiating will be the Rev. Ronald J. Farrell.
Burial will follow at Elmwood Cemetery Annex.
The family will receive friends on Friday evening, December 30, 2011, at the Georgetown Chapel of Mayer Funeral Home from 5 to 7 p.m.

Jack Kendree, Sr.
Jack McLean Kendree, Sr., died Tuesday December 27, 2011, in Georgetown, South Carolina.
He was born on March 28, 1926, in Trenton, Missouri, a son of the late Ulmont R. Kendree and Mary M. (Kendree) Saylor.
Mr. Kendree was a 1944 graduate of Hutchinson (KS) High School.
In the summer of 1943, he was elected Governor of Kansas’ Boy’s State in Wichita and during his senior year he was a member of the high school debate team, which won the state championship.
At graduation, he was presented the “Young American” award.
In the Boy Scouts of America, he attained the rank of Eagle Scout.
Reaching his 18th birthday in March of 1944, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and entered the Navy’s V-12 program for officer candidates.
Mr. Kendree graduated from the University of Kansas with a B.S. degree in civil engineering and from Columbia University in New York City with an M.S. degree in the School of Architecture’s Planning and Housing program.
He remained in the Navy Reserve after the war and attained the rank of Lieutenant J.G. with the Seabees.
During his early professional career, he was a project engineer with Burt and Binford Contractors in Hutchinson, Kansas; served as City Engineer in Dodge City, Kansas; was Director of Slum Clearance and Urban Renewal in Ponce, Puerto Rico; and, was an associate of one of the early contemporary United States planners, Henry S. Churchill, in Philadelphia.
In 1956, he started his own professional consulting firm which subsequently became known as Kendree and Shepherd Planning Consultants with offices over time in Philadelphia; Pittsburgh; Jamestown, N.Y.; Newark, Delaware; Miami, Florida; and, Ponce, Puerto Rico.
Planning studies or projects were carried out in the United States, Europe, and the Caribbean.
During the 1980's, Mr. Kendree served as economic development rirector for Georgetown County, S.C.
Mr. Kendree and his wife Gloria have lived in Georgetown since 1978.
Surviving are his beloved wife Gloria; a son, Michael and his wife Angela of Rock Hill, S.C.; a daughter, Cynthia and her husband James Scott Thieringer of Long Valley, N.J.; and, a son Jack M. Kendree, II of Georgetown; grandchildren, Kendree Thieringer, Kiley Thieringer, Sawyer Thieringer, Charlie Thieringer, Jack McLean Kendree, III, Kara Kendree, Mark Kendree, Michael Kendree, Jr., and Harrison Kendree.
Surviving also are his brother and sister-in-law, U.R. “Al” Kendree and Billie of Scottsdale, Ariz.
A memorial service will be held on Friday, January 6, 2012, at Prince George Winyah Episcopal Church, at a yet to be determined time.

Alberta Simmons
Alberta Lane Simmons, 85, widow of John R. Simmons, died December 27, 2011 at Georgetown Memorial Hospital.
Born on September 23, 1926, in Kingstree, she was a daughter of the late Albert Lane and the late Lilly Alberta Lane.
Survivors include two children, John Michael Simmons and Peggy Ann Simmons; seven grandchildren, Toshua Brown Shelley (Earl), Crystal Martine Simmons, Nathan Simmons, Kelly Simmons, John David Simmons, David Michael Simmons and Jessica Simmons; four great grandchildren, Christopher John Rogers, Bradley Rogers, Patrick William Shelley and Rachel Reagan Shelley; two brothers, Caroll Lane and Henry Lane, one sister, Estelle Bennett; three nieces, Mary Frances Owens, Gwen Dougherty and Darlene Crobin; and five nephews, Wayne Lane, Donald Lane, Ronald Lane, Ernest Bennett and Richard Bennett.
Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, December 30, 2011, in Pennyroyal Memorial Gardens with the Rev. Benji Simmons officiating.
The family received friends from 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday at Graham Funeral Home.

Ann Whetstone
Mrs. Ann Krulien Woodside Whetstone, 85, of Prosperity, S.C., and formerly of St. Matthews, S.C., died Monday, December 26, 2011, at the National Health Care in Greenwood.
Graveside funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Friday December 30, 2011, at West End Cemetery, St. Matthews, with the Reverend Charles Tyler officiating.
Mrs. Whetstone was born June 8, 1926 in Simpsonville, S.C., a daughter of the late John Lawrence Woodside and Ann Krulien Smoke Woodside.
She was a 1947 graduate of Converse College and did post graduate study at Tulane University.
She was an amazing mother who was a constant rock for her children and an unfaltering example of love and affection.
Mrs. Whetstone served as an inspiration, not only for her children, but for all who knew her.
She was very devoted to her children, her extended family and her work.
Mrs. Whetstone worked for the South Carolina Department of Social Services until her retirement as Calhoun County director in 1987.
She was a member of St. Matthews Presbyterian Church.
Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Jack Moorer Whetstone, Jr. and wife, Linda Lee Whetstone of Pawleys Island; a daughter and son-in-law, Ann Harvin Whetstone Hunter and husband, Wilson Gressette Hunter of Greenwood; two granddaughters, Rebecca Ann Hunter Patrick and her husband, John Rainey Patrick of Greenwood and Leea Woodside Whetstone of Pawleys Island; and two grandsons, Benjamin Adams Whetstone and John Baxter Whetstone, both of Pawleys Island.
In addition to her parents, she was also predeceased by a sister, Mrs. Elizabeth (Bette Jane) Woodside Fairey, and her loving husband, Jack Moorer Whetstone.
As an expression of sympathy, memorials may be made to St. Matthews Presbyterian Church, 202 Dantzler Street, St. Matthews, S.C. 29135.
