FUNERAL SERVICES

David Alston

David Willie Alston, 60 , of Murrells Inlet, SC departed this life on December 12, 2009 at Waccamaw Community Hospital.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Greater Gordon Chapel AME Church in Murrells Inlet, SC with Rev. Joe Canteen, Pastor, officiating.

Burial followed in the church cemetery under the direction of McKnight-Fraser Funeral Homes.

Mr. Alston, son of the late Franklin and Anna Belle Alston, was born April 20, 1949 in Georgetown County, SC.

He attended Georgetown County Schools and a member of Gordon Chapel AME Church.

Survivors are his wife, Denise H. Alston, Murrells Inlet, SC; children, David Alston, Sharee Alston, Murrells Inlet, SC, Tonya Holmes, Myrtle Beach, SC and Charise Cook of New Mexico; seven grandchildren; four sisters, Elizabeth Scott, Eva Greene, Lillie Bell Stewart and Betty Beaty; and four brothers, Cecil Alston, Sr., Levi Alston, Freddy Alston and Johnny Alston.

Annie Barnhill

Annie Elizabeth Alma Paul Barnhill, 79, of Hemingway, widow of the Honorable Archie Eason Barnhill Jr., died Tuesday Dec. 15, 2009 in a Georgetown hospital after a long illness.

Mrs. Barnhill was born in Columbia, SC, a daughter of the late George Henry and Lucille Clyburn Paul.

She was a homemaker, a member of the Pleasant Hill Baptist Church and was a graduate of Lower Richland  High School.

Surviving are her children, Joyce (Michael) Hankins of Georgetown, SC, Annette (Phil) Phillips of Florence, SC, Alice D’Agresta of Myrtle Beach, SC, Keith (Hope) Barnhill of Johnsonville, SC, and Archie (Deborah) Barnhill III and Patsy (Nickey) Lewis, both of Hemingway, SC; 19 grandchildren; and 21 great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Barnhill was predeceased by a son, Stanley Barnhill; grandsons, Joshua Barnhill and Rusty Lauger; brother, Jack Paul; and sister, Sissy Hook.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday Dec. 18, 2009 in the Pleasant Hill Baptist Church.

Burial, directed by Morris Funeral Home of Hemingway, will be in the Church Cemetery.

The family will received friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday Dec. 17, 2009 in the Family Life Center of Pleasant Hill Baptist Church.

The family would like to give special thanks her caregivers, Alberta McKnight, Rebecca Scott, Debra Palmer and Siner Woobury.

Col. Daniel Blake

Funeral services with full military honors for Col. Daniel Blake Jr. (U.S. Air Force ret.), age 78, husband of Mrs. Ann Fraser Blake of Dunwoody, GA will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, Dec. 18, 2009 at All Saints Parish, 3560 Kings River Road, Pawleys Island, SC.

Burial will follow in the Waccamaw Cemetery, Pawleys Island, SC.

McKiever Funeral Home, Inc. of Conway is in charge of local arrangements.

Survivors include his wife; and four sons, Daniel Blake III (Claudia), William “Bill” Black (Kelly), Fraser Blake (Holly) and Rick Blake (Shannon), all of Atlanta, GA.

Sharon Bourne

Sharon Ann Dolin Bourne, 58, of Andrews died Wednesday, December 16, 2009, at Georgetown Memorial Hospital.

Mrs. Bourne was born in Madison, W. Va. on April 8, 1951, a daughter of the late Herbert Maxwell Dolin and Betty Jean Giles Dolin.

She moved to Florida as a young girl and was a graduate of Eau Gallie High School in Melbourne, Fla.

Mrs. Bourne was also a graduate of Brevard Community College with a degree as an OB-GYN Technician and Horry-Georgetown Technical College with a Licensed Practical Nurses degree.

She worked as a LPN until she became disabled.

Mrs. Bourne was a member of Spring Gulley Baptist Church.

She was predeceased by a grandson, Jonathan Mixon; and a sister, Jeannie D. Mizrahi.

Surviving are her husband of 42 years, Larry Bourne of Andrews; a son Joey Bourne (Elizabeth) of Andrews; two daughters, Tracey Langston (Jack) of Andrews and Michelle Bowers (Anthony) of Georgetown; a brother, Jimmy Dale Dolin of Cleveland, Ohio; two sisters, Jacqueline D. Brooks of Stuart, Fla. and Beverly D. Glover of Darlington; and seven grandchildren.

Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Saturday afternoon, December 19, 2009, at the graveside in Andrews Memorial Cemetery.

Officiating will be the Rev. Geraldine Bednego.

The family will receive friends at the Andrews Chapel of Mayer Funeral Home Friday evening, December 18, 2009, from 6 to 8 p.m.

Memorials may be made to: Shriners Hospital for Children, 950 W. Faris Rd., Greenville, SC 29605-4277.

Celeste Dixon

 

Celeste Dixon, 66, of DeBordieu Colony in S.C., and  Palm Beach, Florida passed away at Tidelands Hospice House after an illness.

A memorial  service will be at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Georgetown, S.C. on Monday, December 21 at noon followed by a reception.

A separate service will be held in her honor among family members and friends in South Florida.

Mrs. Dixon was born at Windsor Forest Plantation in Jamaica and grew up in Jamaica, Europe, and South America.

She attended preparatory schools in England and graduated from Cambridge University in England with eight distinctions  in commerce and languages, fluent in six languages.

Mrs. Dixon did post graduate work at Universidad CAB  in Caracas and Inchball School of Design in London.

She was a marketing executive with Hilton Hotels in Europe, the Caribbean and United States, and was a real estate developer.

She had been a member of ATME Worldwide, GA Council of International Visitors, Palm Beach International Society, SE Tourism Society, HSMA International, GHTA, and she and her husband had been members of the Royal Jamaican Yacht Club, Tustin Ranch Golf Club, CA, Greenbrier Country Club, KY and  Cherokee Town and Country Club, GA.

She was a descendant of Spanish Conquistador Hernan Cortes and assumed the family title, Countess Cortes.

Mrs. Dixon was predeceased by her parents, Henry and Vivia Williams; and her first husband, Eversley Bahadosingh.

She is survived by her husband, Jobie Dixon; and by step children, Chris Dixon, Charleston SC , Watts Dixon of Greensboro NC, and  Dr. Jean Dixon of Potsdam, Germany; and by half sisters/brothers that include Barbara Bennett, Latida Hendrix, Lima Gomes, Dr. Hanif Williams, all of South Florida and JoanParris-Woodstock of Kingston, Jamaica, Rudolf Williams of Phoenix.  

In lieu of flowers, please make contributions to the Tideland Hospice House in Georgetown, S.C.

Rhoda Freeman

Rhoda M. Jones Freeman, of Georgetown, widow of Lavern Reynolds “Sambo” Freeman, passed away Thursday afternoon, December 17, 2009, at Prince George Health Care Center.

Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Saturday morning, December 19, 2009, at the Georgetown Church of God.

Interment, directed by Georgetown Chapel of McKenzie Funeral Home, will follow in the Spring Gulley Baptist Church Cemetery, Hwy 521 West, Andrews.

Visitation will be prior the service from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. in the sanctuary of the Georgetown Church of God.

Lois Kanehl

Lois Jones Kanehl, 99, of Georgetown died Tuesday, December 15, 2009, at Georgetown Memorial Hospital.

Mrs. Kanehl was born in Bastrop, La. on January 11, 1910, a daughter of the late James Jones and Fannie Middlebrooks Jones.

She lived in Georgetown for many years and was a retired employee of Holliday Oil Co.

Mrs. Kanehl was a member of the Church of Christ.

She was predeceased by her husband, LeRoy Leonard Kanehl; and three daughters, Barbara G. Parsons, Sue G. Morris, and an infant daughter.

Surviving are four grandsons, I. Earl Parsons Jr., Christopher Oliver Morris and Dustin Monroe Morris, all of Georgetown, and James Emory Morris of North Carolina.; a granddaughter, Barbara P. Al-Yousuf of Dubai, United Arab Emirates; and a number of great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Sunday afternoon, December 20, 2009, at the Church of Christ.

Officiating will be Mr. Barry Griffith.

Burial will follow in Pennyroyal Memorial Gardens.

Violet Knight

Violet Christine Hill Knight, 83, of Andrews, widow of Lavern Marion Knight, went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday evening, December 16, 2009.

Mrs. Knight was born a daughter of James Foster Hill and Annie Oliver Hill on February 5, 1926, in Timmonsville.

She was a graduate of Sardis High School; a 40+ yr. Sales and Marketing Department employee for Oneita Industries.

Mrs. Knight was a member of the Andrews First Baptist Church where she served as a Sunday School teacher for the Adult, Youth and Senior Adult classes, served on numerous church committees, and in the Women’s Mission Union.  

She leaves behind two children, Jerry (Allison) Knight and Mrs. Charles (Jeanette) Flegel; four grandchildren, Richard (Lisa) Knight, Rozlind (Danny) Hardman, Chuck (Julie) Flegel, and Jeffrey Flegel; four great-grandchildren, Chandler, Hunter, Trey (Mandy), and Jessica; one great-great-grandchild, Mark; one brother, James Russell (Evelyn); and three sisters, Marion H. Anderson, Emma Jean H. Skinner, and Rebecca (Harry) Kirby.

She was predeceased by her parents and a son-in-law.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Saturday, December 19, 2009, at the Andrews First Baptist Church with interment in the Andrews Memorial Cemetery directed by the Andrews Chapel of McKenzie Funeral Home.  

Visitation will be 6 to 8 p.m. Friday evening, December 18, 2009, at the Andrews Chapel.

Memorials may be made to the Andrews First Baptist Church, Building Fund, 102 Rosemary Ave., Andrews, SC 29510.

Janie Nelson

 

Mrs. Janie Nelson, 83, of Georgetown, SC, died on Monday, December 14, 2009 at Georgetown Memorial Hospital.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, December 20, 2009 at Lighthouse of Jesus Christ Church, conducted by Elder Johnny McCray.

Mrs. Nelson was born October 22, 1926 in Georgetown County, SC.

She attended Georgetown County schools and was employed for many years as a housekeeper at Safari Motel in Myrtle Beach, SC.

She was a member of Alpha Holiness Church and often attended Lighthouse of Jesus Christ as well.

Mrs. Nelson is survived by two daughters, Janie Green of Baltimore, MD, and Denise Myers of Georgetown, SC; and one brother, Rayford Johnson of Charleston, SC.

Visitation will be held from 6 to 7 p.m. on Saturday, December 19, 2009 at Alpha Holiness Church in the Sampit community.

 Funeral service arrangements are entrusted and directed by Wilds Funeral Home, LLC.

Joseph Parson

Joseph Parson, 83 of Georgetown, SC, died on Tuesday, December 15, 2009 in Georgetown, South Carolina.

Funeral services for Mr. Parson will be held at 12 noon on Saturday, December 19, 2009 at First Calvary Missionary Baptist Church.

Mr. Parson was born April 16, 1926  in Georgetown, SC to John Ravenel Parson and Mrs. Mable Eaddy Parson.

He  was a retired Longshoreman.

He is survived by his daughters, Mrs. Zena Mae Parson Reddick and Mrs Janice Murray, both of Georgetown, SC; and his sons, Tyrone Parson and Carl Parson, both of Georgetown, SC, and Herbert Parson of Charleston, SC.

Viewing will be held from 6 p.m. on Friday, December 18, 2009 at Wilds Courtyard Chapel.

Funeral service arrangements are entrusted and directed by Wilds Funeral Home.

Tyrone White

 

Tyrone White of Georgetown died December 14, 2009 at the Medical University of South Carolina Hospital in Charleston, SC from injuries sustained in automobile accident.

He attended Georgetown County Schools and graduated through Job Corps.

For a number of years he was employed as a floor tech at Georgetown Healthcare.

Mr. White is survived by his wife, Mrs. Marie Price White and his mother, Ms. Nancy Humes, both of Georgetown; and his siblings, Jawanna Humes of Ft. Stewart, GA, Karen White of Dunyfries, VA, Sherrell Henry Of El Paso, TX, Shawn White of Charleston, SC, Craig Humes of Ewa Beach, Hawaii and Kimberly White Humes of Gerogetown, SC.  

Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. on Sunday, December 20, 2009 at Wilds Courtyard Chapel.

Funeral service will  be held at 12 noon on Monday, December 21, 2009 at Wilds Courtyard Chapel,  conducted by Rev. Michael Burgess.

Burial follows at Bethel AME Church Cemetery in North Santee.
