FUNERAL SERVICES

Alberta Mae Brooks

Mrs. Alberta Mae Brooks, 92, of 33 Chapel Street, Charleston, SC departed this life on Tuesday, August 3, 2010 at her daughter’s residence.

Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Monday, August 9, 2010 at Greater St. Stephen A.M.E. Church, Georgetown, SC with the Rev. Carl Anderson officiating.

Burial will follow in the Morning Glory Cemetery under the direction of McKnight-Fraser Funeral Homes.

Mrs. Brooks, daughter of the late Rebecca Anna and Morris Moultrie was born March 3, 1918 in Georgetown, SC.

She was a member of St. Stephen A.M.E. Church in Georgetown, SC where she served as an usher, and sang on the choir.

She received her early education in Georgetown County public school system and graduated from Benedict College in Columbia, SC.

Mrs. Brooks was employed with the Georgetown County School District, Georgetown Memorial Hospital, and was also a self-employed beautician.

   Survivors are her daughter Gloria McFadden of Charleston, SC; her grandchildren, Janice Rivera and Rickey Frazier, Sr., both of Waterbury, Conn., and Anthony Frazier of Charleston, SC; eight great-grandchildren; eighteen great-great-grandchildren, four nephews; two nieces; and many other relatives and friends.

James Chandler

James Stuart Chandler Jr., 60, of Pawleys Island died Saturday, August 7, 2010, at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston.

Mr. Chandler was born in Conway on December 4, 1949, a son of the late James Stuart Chandler and Sara May McKinney Chandler.

He attended Georgetown County schools and graduated from Winyah High School in 1968.

Mr. Chandler graduated in 1972 from Davidson College with a B. A. in Economics and received his Masters in Business Administration from the University of South Carolina in 1973.

He received his Law degree from the University of South Carolina in 1977.

He married Rebecca McCarthy in 1976.

Mr. Chandler returned to Georgetown County where he was an environmental attorney and founder and President of the S. C. Environmental Law Project (S.C.E.L.P.).

He was a member of the Sierra Club and the League of Women Voters.

During his career he was awarded the Sierra Club’s “William O. Douglas Award,” the S. C. General Assembly’s “Environmental Awareness Award,” and the S. C. Wildlife Federations’ “Conservationist of the Year Award.”

Mr. Chandler was fully dedicated to his family, his passion for the protection of the environment, and his participation in a local band.

Mr. Chandler was predeceased by a brother, Wayne McKinney Chandler.

Surviving are his wife, Rebecca McCarthy Chandler of Pawleys Island; a daughter, Leigh Caroline Chandler of Pawleys Island; two sisters, Sara Ann Chandler Hooks (Jim) of Pawleys Island and Lucile Chandler Cook (Rodney) of Georgetown; a brother-in-law, Michael McCarthy (Linda) of  Kingston, Tennessee; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Memorial services will be Wednesday, August 11, 2010, at 2 p.m. in Georgetown Presbyterian Church.

There will be a reception in the Church Fellowship Hall following the service.

Fedora Cosentine

Fedora Nicoletti Cosentine, 98, of Georgetown died Wednesday, August 4, 2010, at Prince George HealthCare Center.

Mrs. Cosentine was born on December 26, 1911, in Bronx, N.Y., a daughter of the late Ettore Romulus Nicoletti and Elvira Simmonetti Nicoletti.

She was a former president of the Rosary Society in Plainfield, N.J. and a member of Saint Cyprian’s Catholic Church in Georgetown.

Dora was always there to lend a helping hand or give a kind word.

She will be remembered for her laughter, her generosity and her love of life.

Mrs. Cosentine was equally loved by family and friends and will be dearly missed.

Surviving are two daughters, Dorianne Harris of Pawleys Island and Anna Cosentine of Taos, N.M.; three grandchildren, Christian Harris (Tracy), Grant Harris (Wendy) and Brian Harris (Jamie); and five great-grandchildren.

A celebration of her life will be held at a later date.

Heather Johnson

Heather Lorraine Johnson, 34, of Georgetown died August 5, 2010 at Georgetown Memorial Hospital.

Born on October 18, 1975 in Georgetown, she was a daughter of Myra Baker Ranta and the late William Frederick Johnson.

Miss Johnson was a member of First Baptist Church Georgetown and was employed as a nurse.

Survivors include her mother and step father, Mr. and Mrs. Gil Ranta of Pawleys Island; step mother, Joan Johnson of Florida; maternal grandparents, Lousie and Carrol Baker of Georgetown; a beloved son, Dawson McNeil Johnson of Georgetown; a brother, Parker Johnson of Florida; a sister, Callie Johnson West of Myrtle Beach; two step-sisters, Rebecca Ranta of New Hampshire and Sherry Fugerson of Florida; a step-brother, Tim Conway; and numerous aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her father and paternal grandparents, Gladi Johnson Brandon and William Johnson.

Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. Sunday August 8, 2010 at First Baptist Church Georgetown with the Rev. Keith Wall officiating.

Burial followed in the Pennyroyal Memorial Gardens.

The family received friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday at Graham Funeral Home.

Memorials may be made to a trust fund for Heather’s son Dawson.

Eunice Langston

Eunice Johnston Langston, 78, of Georgetown died Thursday, August 5, 2010 at her residence.

Mrs. Langston was born in Marion County on June 19, 1932, a daughter of the late Rudy E. Johnston and Ruth Williams Johnston Calhoun.

She grew up in Horry Co. and was a graduate of Conway High School.

Mrs. Langston was the owner of the Frame Corner.

She was an active member of the First Baptist Church and served her church in a number of capacities.

Mrs. Langston served on the 300th Anniversary, Flower, and Finance Committees of the church, and was a member of the Lydia Sunday School Class.

She was also a member of the Maryville and Magnolia Garden Clubs and Winyah Chapter #148, Order of the Eastern Star.

Mrs. Langston was predeceased by: her husband, Thomas D. Langston; a sister, LeVeta “Lolly” Scurry; a half-brother, Hoyt F. Johnston; and two half-sisters, Marie J. Salvo and Magdalene J. Key.

Surviving are two sons, Thomas D. Langston, Jr. (Elaine) and George Kevin Langston (Karis), both of Georgetown; two daughters, Janet Langston Smith (Jimmy Joe) of Georgetown and Nancy Langston Rowell (Tracy) of Pawleys Island; three sisters, Elva J. Wooten (David) of Florence, Rudene J. Hucks, and Billie J. Johnson, both of Myrtle Beach; a brother, Rudy Earl Johnston (Sara) of Cross; nine grandchildren; Joseph L. Smith, Kristen J. Smith, Gregory M. Smith, Hunter W. Smith, T. Daniel Langston, T. David Langston, III, and Robert J. Ward, III, all of Georgetown, and Seth M. Rowell and Elizabeth J. Rowell, both of Pawleys Island.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Monday morning, August 9, 2010, at First Baptist Church.

Officiating will be the Rev. Dr. Ted A. Sherrill.

Burial will follow in Pennyroyal Memorial Gardens.

Sam Powell Sr.

Sam “Mickey” Powell Sr., 69, husband of Margaret Ray Powell of Andrews, entered into eternal rest on Saturday August 7, 2010 at his home.

Born on December 6, 1940 in Georgetown County he was a son of the late Luther James Powell and the late Dorothy Mae Parker Powell.

Mr. Powell was a member of Holy Trinity Pentecostal Holiness Church and was employed by International Paper as a commercial welder.

Survivors include his loving wife of Andrews, three daughters, Marie Marshall (John) of Andrews, Melissa Scarborough (Dan) of Georgetown and Rev. Regina Belue (Fred) of Andrews; two sons, Matthew Powell (Joy) of Georgetown and Sam Powell Jr. (Kathy), of Andrews; 12 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and a number of nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Billy Powell and Luther “Bubba” Powell; and a sister Barbara Marlowe.

Funeral Services will be held at 4 p.m. Monday, August 9, 2010 at The River Pentecostal Holiness Church with the Rev. David Richardson, Sr. and Rev. Regina Belue officiating.

Burial will follow in Bethel United Methodist Church Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at The River Pentecostal Holiness Church.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to The River Pentecostal Holiness Church Youth Ministry, 628 Morrisville Rd., Andrews, SC 29510.
