FUNERAL SERVICES

Doris Beal

Doris Nebel Beal, 88, of Pawleys Island died August 24, 2010, at her residence in Litchfield Plantation.

Mrs. Beal was born on January 24, 1922 in Apex, N.C., a daughter of the late William Nebel and Marion Phillips Nebel. 

She attended Salem College and was a lifetime summer resident of Blowing Rock, N.C.

She was predeceased by her husband of 56 years, Harold Francis Beal.

Surviving are two daughters, Pamela B. Winter and Deborah B. Thomas, both of Georgetown, S.C.; a son, Harold F. Beal of Rockford, Tenn.; six grandchildren; and three great-grandsons.

A family graveside service will be held in Charlotte, N.C.

The Georgetown Chapel of Mayer Funeral Home will be in charge.

Rebecca Driggers

Rebecca Kibler Driggers, 95, of Newberry, SC, widow of Daniel Luther “Pete” Driggers, died Thursday, August 26, 2010, at Tidelands Community Hospice in Georgetown.

Born on September 26, 1914, in Pomaria, she was a daughter of the late Adam and Lavina Ruff Kiber.

Mrs. Driggers was a retired sales associate at B.C. Moore.

She was a member of St. Philip’s Lutheran Church where she was a member of the Joy Fellowship and the B Sunday School Class.

Surviving are her daughters and sons-in-law, Donna and Tom Crean of Springfield, VA and Linda and Gerry Harmon of Georgetown; a brother, Earl Kibler of Spartanburg; five grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by a brother, David Kibler, sisters, Ruth Stone, Claudia Stone, Ethel Livingston, Eloise Werts, Kathryn Mills and Sudie Metts.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, August 29, 2010, at St. Philip’s Lutheran Church by the Rev. Terry Amick.

Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Visitation was Saturday from 6 to 8 p.m. at McSwain-Evans Funeral Home. 

Memorials may be made to St. Philip’s Lutheran Church, 2461 St. Philip’s Church Road, Newberry, SC 29108.

Joseph Groverman

Joseph Bivens Groverman, 85, of Georgetown died Saturday, August 28, 2010, at his residence.

Mr. Groverman was born in Georgetown on November 25, 1924, a son of the late Henry John Groverman and Mary Catherine Bivens Groverman.

He served in the Army during World War II and was a business man and farmer.

He was a member of First Baptist Church.

Mr. Groverman was predeceased by his wife, Myra Mitchum Groverman.

Surviving are two grandchildren, Stephany Groverman and Blaine Murrow, both of Georgetown; and a number of nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be on Tuesday morning, August 31, 2010, at First Baptist Church at ten o’clock.

Officiating will be the Rev. Dr. Ted A. Sherrill.  Burial will follow at Pennyroyal Memorial Gardens.

Vernon Hines

Vernon Cassidy Hines (April 4, 1917 - July 31, 2010) was born in Newkirk, Oklahoma. He led a very full and rich life.

He was raised as a young boy in Texas, Oklahoma and Kansas. He spent a lot of time on the 101 Ranch, near Ponca City, OK, with Zack Miller and was a rodeo cowboy.

He was in the military from 1940 – 1945 moving to the position of Captain and Field Artillery Battery Commander. He was in both the Pacific and European Theaters during World War II and received several commendations including the Bronze and Silver Stars.

He operated his own manufacturing business in Denver, CO until 1989. During that time he worked with the plumbing and heating industry, acquired numerous patents, designed and made the fuel lines and other parts for the Apollo spacecraft as well as operated one of the only cleaning facilities in the nation for the fuel lines, designed and manufactured expansion joints for the food machinery industry and sold his patent for a collapsible steering wheel to Mitsubishi.

In his private life he was a founder of Christ’s Episcopal Church in Denver during the 50’s, was an active “Mason” during most of his adult life, owned and operated the Peck House (the oldest operating hotel and restaurant in CO), purchased Red Man Hall in Empire, CO which he turned into a premier Native American art gallery, bred and raced champion trotting horses, raised and sold llamas, was president of the Georgetown Historical Society from 1979 to 1984, wrote a book titled “The America’s Cup” and traveled the world over.

In his later years he lived in San Carlos, Mexico. He moved in July 2009 to WA to be closer to his daughter and died in Friday Harbor, WA.

He loved life and his fellow man. Nephews, cousins and many friends have said that he left behind a legacy to be proud of in the way he approached and lived his life.

He was pre-deceased by his wife Bridgetta (Getta) Hines and Winnie Hines.

He leaves behind his son, Bruce Hines from Las Vegas, NV; his daughter, Katie Thomas of Orcas Island, WA; a son-in-law, Lew Thomas of Orcas Island, WA; a stepson, Michael Downing; granddaughters, Kristine Neiswander and her husband Jason, Michele Lewis, Nicole Hill and her husband Ken and Grandson T.J.Azevedo and his wife Terri.

His step-grandchildren are Kellie Caldwell, Erin Bescheinen and her husband Rob, Scott Thomas and his wife Emma, Justin, Tyler and Garrett Wade Downiing. He had 19 great-grandchildren.

There will be a memorial service in Grand Junction, CO to be announced at a later date.

Ronald Richardson Sr.

Ronald Richardson Sr., 72, the husband Doris Mae Smith Richardson of Georgetown, went to be with the Lord on Thursday, August 26, 2010, at his residence.

Mr. Richardson was born a son of Richard “Dick” Richardson and Bertha McKenzie Richardson on December 22, 1937 in Kingstree, SC.

He was the founder and operator of Ronald’s Carpet Installation and was an employee of Georgetown County as a recycle center attendant. He was a faithful member of the Georgetown Church of God where he served in several positions. 

Ronald and Doris were married January 4, 1959 and celebrated 51 years together. Their union was blessed with four children: Ronald Richardson, Jr., Timothy Dale (Brenda) Richardson, Penny Lynn Richardson Barnes, and Doris Ann Richardson who passed as a child; seven grandchildren, and three grandchildren. He is also survived by two brothers, Calvin (Nathalee) Richardson and John Richardson; and two sisters, Julia Witska and Leona Rector.

He was predeceased by his parents; a daughter; a son-in-law, Donnie Barnes; three brothers, Daniel Richardson, Joe Richardson, and D.R. Richardson; and one sister, Iva Lee R. Lambert.

A Homegoing Celebration Service will be held at 3 p.m., August 29, 2010, in the Georgetown Church of God with interment in the Pennyroyal Memorial Gardens directed by the Georgetown Chapel of McKenzie Funeral Home. 

Visitation will be 6 to 8 p.m., Saturday, August 28, 2010 at the Georgetown Chapel (843-546-0198). 

McKenzie Funeral Home is honored to serve the Richardson family.
