Multiple controlled burns taking place

The smoke from the Friendfield Plantation controlled burn can be seen for miles.
People are wondering about the heavy smoke that can be seen billowing in the skies over Georgetown.
Even though from some angles it appears either the steel mill or paper mill are on fire, that is not the case.
Tony Hucks, assistant fire chief for the county, says it is a controlled woods burn in the area of Friendfield Plantation.
These types of burns take place throughout the county each year.
There are other controlled burns taking place in the county. According to the S.C. Forestry Commission, they are along Highway 701 near Exodus Drive; Along Highway 701 near Choppee Road; U.S. 17 near Pennyroyal Road; and near Yawkey-South Island Reserve.
