If you would like a shot at serving on the Georgetown County School Board, filing for five of the nine seats starts Wednesday.

The seats that will be on the November ballot are now held by Sarah Elliott (District 1), Sandra Johnson (District 3), Zelma Carr (District 4), Elery Little (District 5) and Teresa Bennani (District 6).

Bennani has announced she is not seeking another term but County Elections Director Donna Mahn said she has been contacted by Pawleys Island resident Richard Kerr who said he is seeking that seat.

“It has been a privilege and honor to serve the Pawleys Island community and the citizens of Georgetown County,” Bennani said in a letter to the editor that can be found on Page 15A of today’s paper.

She also said she feels Kerr, who ran for the board in 2008 and 2010, would be an asset to the panel.

“I think he would make a good candidate and serve the area well,” Bennani said.

Kerr said he has been involved in the schools for the past few years because he has a 12-year-old in the school system.

He said he feels the school board “could use some people who have been in business and have management talent.”

Mahn said both Elliott and Carr have told her they are seeking another term. Little told the Georgetown Times Thursday he also wants to serve another four years.

“I think things are going well and we need to keep it going,” Little said.

Filing for a seat on the board begins at noon Wednesday and continues until noon Aug. 15.

The elections are non-partisan and there is no filing fee.
