Eggiman: Witnesses saw shark before bite in Litchfield
One man has been transported to Waccamaw Community Hospital to be treated for a bite he received while in the ocean off of Norris Drive in Litchfield at about 11:45 a.m.
The man, whose age is not yet known, says he was bitten by a shark but Midway Fire Rescue Chief Doug Eggiman says that has not been confirmed, although witnesses on the beach back up the man’s account of what happened.
The man reportedly suffered the injury on his foot.
Eggiman said the injury is consistent with a bite. He also said witnesses reported seeing a “three to five foot shark” in the area around the time the bite took place.
When asked if a doctor will be able to determine what caused the injury, Eggiman said that will depend on the doctor’s level of expertise in various species of sea life.
He said he sees no reason for people to stop enjoying the ocean.
“Shark bites are very rare in this area,” Eggiman said.
He said the Department of Natural Resources has been notified of the incident.
