GEORGETOWN, S.C. — It is not unusual for a movie to go through one or more name changes between the time a script is conceived and the film’s release.
According to Hollywood trade publications, that is what has happened with the movie being filmed in and around Georgetown starting next week.
Since the news of the filming broke last month, the feature has been called “Isopod.” But, those who follow the movie industry for a living, say the production now has a new name.
According to the website JoBlo.com and others, the new title is “The Bay.”
The crew at the local movie office on Front Street have been tight-lipped about the plot of the movie but JoBlo reports it has been able to uncover some of the details of the film being directed by Barry Levinson.
When asked Tuesday about the reports, David Thornsberg of the production said nothing can be “confirmed or denied” about the reports at this time.
JoBlo writer George Merchan describes the movie as “sort of ecological horror thriller, focusing on a viral outbreak taking place on the Eastern Seaboard.”
He also sources Screen Daily when reporting details about the film.
"The Bay centers on the aftermath of a viral outbreak on the Eastern Seaboard. The story is told via a series of recordings on camera phones, 911 calls and other scraps of video as the town of Claridge, Maryland, is engulfed by chaos," the website states.
The website Hollywood.com opines Levinson “is trying to create his film in a new and fresh way, but we can't help but wonder, Blair Witch Project anyone?”
One of the producers of the film is Oren Peli, known most recently for the 2007 movie Paranormal Activity — about a young couple haunted by a supernatural presence in their home.
Filming for the theatrical feature is scheduled to begin Sept. 14. One portion of the film will center around a hometown carnival. To make that part of the film, parts of Front Street will be used as the location of a festival. It’s unknown when that will take place.
More than 600 people showed up during a recent casting call looking for extras for the movie.
Fair Scenes this Tuesday
As previously reported, one of the scenes that will be shot revolves around a 4th of July festival.
The tents and exhibits for the festival will be set up next week at Frances Marion Park and parts of Front Street.
Thornsberg said as many extras as can be found will be need to create a full festival for the scenes.
He said anyone who wants to participate is asked to show up at the park by 9 a.m. Tuesday.
He said it is important no one wear any clothing that identifies a specific place because the festival is supposed to be taking place in a fictitious town.
