Mitney Project of Georgetown trying to raise $101K in one month
The Mitney Project — a nonprofit organization providing cultural enrichment, educational programs which will soon include medical needs — has the opportunity to receive a $99,000 grant that will help with the renovations of its new facility on Merriman Road.
But, it is a matching grant and a lot of money has to be raised this month in order to receive the grant.
Mitney Project Chairwoman Barbara Huell some of the funds were raised but had to be used for some of the programs, currently being provided out of the Howard Adult Center. That’s because, she said, the grant donor wanted to see programs in place before committing to the funds.
Around $101,000 needs to be raised before the deadline in order to receive the grant. As of Tuesday afternoon, about $3,200 had been pledged.
“We have put nearly $150,000 in the renewal of the center. $101,000 in a month sounds crazy I know but, believe me, it happens all the time. It takes just a few seconds of reaching out,” Huell wrote in an e-mail. “ The space being worked on will be home to a community clinic, entrepreneurial training, financial mastery classes.”
Huell said it is very important the new Mitney home at the corner of Merriman Road and Front Street be complete because the county will soon begin renovations at Howard and the programs taking place there will have to relocate. She also said doctors are waiting to move into the building. They will provide a variety of medical services with a focus on childhood obesity and diabetes.
“We are confident we will reach our goal,” Huell said.
The organization has enlisted the help of Indiegogo, a website that helps with fundraising campaigns. Because of that, contributions can be made online. Click here to donate.
“You can make this a winning cause by sending this link to everyone you know. Giving whatever you can – even $10 goes a long way,” Huell wrote.
Some of the programs the Mitney Project currently provides include: Gotta Have Art!, In-Step Dance Studio and Musical Theatre Studio, High Note Music Lab, Think Space Design Lab – Robotics, Glitterbox Photo and Film Studio, Big Shot Sound Studio, Log On! – Computer Lab, T.I.G.E.R. (Teaching and Inspiring Greater Educational Readiness) Mentoring, B.O.O.S.T (Building Options and Opportunities for Start-ups), Fitness and Wellness, Social Development Events.
