Outreach Farm is a non-profit organization that raises beef cattle and provides high quality beef at no cost, to non-profit organizations that feed the hungry in South Carolina.
These non-profit organizations that receive beef provide services that range from feeding the hungry at a soup kitchen, to taking care of, educating and feeding disadvantaged youth.
The cattle are located on a farm in Hemingway.
Starting with three cows, they now have about 150 cows.
Most of the cows are bred to produce calves, which will add to the Farm's population.
What do you like about being part of Outreach Farm?
It is for the greater good. Outreach Farm is a wonderful organization that helps a lot of people.
I also like that it is community-based and strictly volunteer.
What is something people might not know about Outreach Farm?
One thing I don't think people realize is what a large impact this organization has on our immediate community.
We will serve about 40,000 meals in 2010.
We are filling a huge need.
We are providing beef to soup kitchens, Tara Hall Boys school, Friendship Place, Teach My People, Father Pat’s Kitchen and others.
Can you tell me about the recent chili cookoff fundraiser?
It was very successful. Approximately 400 people were there and we had 26 participants.
All the money raised goes directly into the Outreach Farm.
There is no middle man, and no expenses other than paper products.
I understand you won third place in the amateur division?
Yes, I did. It was a lot of fun serving my chili.
Other winners were Bistro 217, Roz’s Rice Mill Cafe, Bove, Precious Blood Women and Margie Wolfe.
What do you enjoy doing in your spare time?
I like playing golf.
I enjoy the comradery that the game brings, the enjoyment of being together with friends.
I wish I had a couple of hole-in-one shadowboxes on the wall, but not yet.
My wife, Jill, did get a hole-in-one in February 2009.
I am a member of two local golf groups: Pawleys Plantation Golf and Country Club and the Heritage Weekend Warriors.
I also enjoy hunting.
I am a member of a private hunt club in Chester County.
We really enjoy living here in Pawleys Island.
We are living a vacation every day — a resort lifestyle.
If want to play golf, I grab my clubs, if we want to go out to eat, there are 30 restaurants to choose from.
Or we can grab our beach chairs and go to ocean.
Can you tell me about Jill’s occupation?
She is a trans-Atlantic flight attendant with U.S. Airways.
— as told to Clayton Stairs
